WHALE IVORY SCRIMSHAW PIE CRIMPER with a carved Eagle head at the end of the handle. Wheel arms, handle and Eagle all made using 2 pieces of whale ivory and baleen spacer where two sections join. The four sides of the handle inset with 16 pieces of baleen, mother of pearl and abalone shell in the form of rectangles, diamonds, half circle, dot and shield designs. Inset baleen discs for Eagle's eyes and some red coloring in the mouth and beak area. Nice, open carved, whale ivory, serrated wheel in the form of star shaped spokes. Wheel diameter 2". Overall length 6 3/8". Condition excellent. Comes with a custom metal display stand. Has a nice provenance dating back to the 1920's. Once part of the collection of the New Bedford Whaling Museum's first curator, Frank Wood. Illustrated in Old Dartmouth Historical Society 1957 publication where they included a much earlier photo of the Wood crimper collection. Also was part of the Frederck H. Howell crimper collection(formed in the early 1900's) which I handled and illustrated in my 1984 catalog #18, item #51.
