19TH CENTURY SCRIMSHAW CARVED SPERM WHALE TOOTH. One side with a starboard view of a whale ship under full sail approaching a mountainous island. Scene sits within a simple frame. Reverse with a large portrait of an elegantly dressed, seated female holding back a drape with her right hand. Over her left shoulder is a portion of an elaborate column and arch. The engraved work is superb, bold and confidently applied. Almost solid tooth that measures 6 3/4" l. x 3 1/8" w. Condition fine. Desirable age patina throughout. Circa 1840. From my personal collection.
