SUPERB BALEEN BUSK PROFUSELY ENGRAVED ON BOTH SIDES. One side having several panels containing floral and vine designs, an 8 point star, etc. At the top are the initials "S.W.N." and two inlaid whalebone discs that go through to the other side. The entire border is meticulously chip carved with small half circles. The reverse also with multiple panels that also contain floral and leaf motifs along with four crossed American Flags above a large American Shield. The entire border edge also chip carved. Throughout the engraving are areas where red color highlites were added. 11 3/4"l. x 1 5/16"w. Condition excellent having no worm damage. All the engraved work boldly done and clearly visible. It is a thin, very flexible piece of baleen that does have some warpage that is really not distracting. Baleen busks don't come any better that this one. Circa 1830-40.
