LARGE PORTRAIT OF A 19TH CENTURY AMERICAN SEA CAPTAIN. Very desirable image that shows the young captain holding his wood barrel spyglass with a portrait of his vessel in the background. The vessel flies an American flag and a banner with the name of the bark "J.W. Paige". Oil on canvas. 36" x 29" plus a 4" wide antique, lemon gold, frame. Condition lined and excellent. Identified as Captain William Farnsworth of Rockland, Maine. Attributed to the Baltimore artist William Hare(1815-1865). From the collection of J. Wells Henderson and illustrated on page 42 in his book "Marine Art & Antiques JACK TAR A Sailor's Life 1750-1910". Portraits of captains that depict him with his telescope plus a view of an identified American flag flying vessel are quite rare. Overall a most impressive example of its type.
We are always interested in purchasing nautical antiques. If you are selling one piece or your entire collection we would appreciate hearing from you.
