SUPERBLY ENGRAVED WHALEBONE PANEL BY THE SCRIMSHANDER REFERRED TO AS THE BRITISH WARSHIP ENGRAVER. At first glance it appears to be a scrimshaw busk but it is far too large and thick/stiff for that use. 13 1/2" l. x 2 1/4" w. Large center panel depicts an active whaling scene with a whale ship in the background and three whaleboats capturing a sperm whale. Left and right panels with beautifully rendered landscape scenes and cottages. Each scene separated by a baseball stitch design. Condition superb. So far there are 3 known whalebone panels and 3 scrimshaw teeth by this artist. This one was purchased by the previous owner at a Sotheby's, London sale about 30 years ago.
