Gold Rush Era Scrimshaw
Description

WONDERFUL SCRIMSHAW CARVED TOOTH with the front depicting a sailor returning home to his awaiting wife. Below the scene is the verse "MY LOVE don't fear/be of good cheer I have/Plenty of gold in store". The sailor holds a large bag of gold in his left hand and in the background his ship can seen sailing away. To the lower left of the poem is a sitting dog. Along the lower left edge is an American Indian with head dress carrying his bow and quiver of arrows. He has his pipe axe in his waistband. The reverse with  a dancing female playing castanets. 6 3/4" h. x 3" w. Condition fine. Lovely age yellow throughout. Another gold rush related tooth, likely by the same hand, was in the Michael Gill Collection. Wonderful subject matter on this fresh to the market tooth.
