SUPERB PAIR OF SPERM WHALE TEETH PROFUSELY ENGRAVED BY THE ARTISAN REFERRED TO AS "THE BANKNOTE ENGRAVER". Fronts of both with lovely garden scenes depicting a well dressed young man courting a woman likely with the hope of marriage. Each scene fully framed within an elaborate array of floral and filigree motifs. Circling the tip and base are the artist's trademark filigree designs. The reverse of the tooth with the seated lady beautifully engraved with a depiction of two ships under sail, one with an American flag. The reverse of the other with a large starboard view of an American ship under sail. 6" h. x 2.75" w. Teeth with cut bases and are now completely solid. Condition fine with just typical sound age cracks scattered throughout. Magnificent age color over their entire surfaces. Exhibited in 2022 at the Cahoon Museum on Cape Cod. Illustrated on pages 143 & 144 in Alan Granby's book "Wandering Whalemen And Their Art". From my personal collection.
