W. L. Roderick
Description

REMARKABLE PANBONE ENGRAVING BY WILLIAM LEWIS RODERICK. Masterfully executed interior scene depicting eight children and a teacher in a small room doing different tasks like reading and sewing. Captioned below in fancy script "The Sister's School From Crabbe's "Tales of the Hall". In tiny letters just below the lower left and lower right of the scene is the artist's signature "Engraved by/W.L. Roderick". Scene size 5 5/8" x 7". Overall size of the Panbone 8" x 9 3/8". Roderick likely copied the scene from an illustration in "Crabbe's Tales of the Hall" which was published 1819. The precision of Roderick's engraving makes it appear, at first glance, that the actual illustration was pasted on the piece of Panbone. It is fascinating to look at all the details under magnification.....every time you look you find another perfectly rendered object in the room. Overall condition superb. William Lewis Roderick was the ship's surgeon on the bark "Adventure" during three voyages between 1847-1856. This rates among the best executed pieces of scrimshaw that I have ever seen.
