Whaling Journal, Martha's Vineyard Ship
Description

"LOG BOOK OF WHALESHIP YORK OF/EDGARTOWN TOWARDS THE PACIFIC OCEAN/GEORGE COFFIN MASTER/IN THE YEARS 1844. 5 & 6" is the neatly penned title at the beginning of this journal. The entire log profusely illustrated with approximately 170 original watercolor drawings. Keeper did not use whale stamps to denote whale sightings, captures, losses, etc., instead doing original watercolors of each event. There are 73 sketches depicting whales, 9 of whales and ships, 46 of just ships, 5 blackfish, 19 land and sky depictions plus 4 showing falling stars, 5 of crescent moon and sun and 7 denoting anchors and flags. On the third page is a well done starboard view of the "York" flying an American flag and a pennant with the letter "Y". The first entry is on April 29, 1844 and last being March 2, 1847 "running for Vineyard Sound". Starbuck lists the voyage as departing April 28, 1844 and returning March 2, 1847 with 500 bbls of sperm oil, 2100 bbls of whale oil and 20,000 pounds of whalebone. In addition to the watercolor drawings the entire journal is beautifully penned and totally legible. Marbleized hard covers with leather spine. 15 1/2" x 9 1/4". Overall condition superb. Was exhibited in 2018 at the "Martha's Vineyard Preservation Trust". An important and beautifully executed American whaling journal.        p.o.r
