*229. EXCEPTIONAL LARGE DOUBLE SAILOR'S VALENTINE...."HOME AGAIN". Throughout all the
years this is about the nicest example of its type that I've had. Each octago-
nal wood section 14" wide. Even has diamond shaped brass escutcheon
plate for keyhole. One side with a flower over a heart all of which is sur-
rounded by a large 8-point star and other classic shell designs and borders.
Other side with large circular center made of tiny white and brown shells
that form letters for slogan "HOME AGAIN". Saying completely surrounded
by numerous colorful shell designs. Condition superb. Very high quality
example. Would be hard to find a nicer one. Circa 1850.

*230. EARLY POLYCHROME COLORED WHALEBONE BUSK. Circa 1840. 13 3/4"l. x 1 5/8"w. Done in sev-
eral different panels with bottom section depicting a large
fancy vase containing red flowers with the two at top being
heart shaped. Center sections with floral basket along with
tree and foliate motifs. Very top with classic pin-wheel design. Condition excellent. Nice age patina.  2150.00
*231. LARGE SINGLE SHELL VALENTINE. Was originally made as a single and defi-
nitely not a section of a double. 13" wide octagonal wood box that is fitted with a gilt
liner along inside edge. Center with a large pink flower that is surrounded by an 8-point
star and numerous other classic shell designs. Condition very good noting just a couple
of small shells loose in box. Unusual and quite attractive. Circa 1850.

*232. 19TH CENTURY PANBONE SCRIMSHAW
CARVED WITH WHALING SCENE. 5"h. x 8"l. Within a
foliate border is stbd view of whaleship off a mountainous island. In fore-
ground are four longboats harpooning and lancing Sperm whales. By the
same artisan as examples illustrated on cover and pages 40 & 41 in
"Scrimshaw The Art of The Whaler" by West and Credland. Artist is also
referred to as "panbone engraver" in the "Dictionary of Scrimshaw Artists"
by Stuart Frank. We originally sold this piece back in 1982(catalog 16, lot
23) and recently purchased it back from that collector. Condition fine noting a 3" long age crack in upper
right section that does not affect the scene at all. Nice age color throughout. Lovely quality.

*233. HEAVILY CARVED SCRIMSHAW CANE. Whalebone shaft carved nearly entire length with varying
diamond knurl and rope twist with worming designs. Whale ivory
knob carved into monkey fist motif using style of rope with added
worming. Whale ivory and tropical wood washers where handle
joins shaft. Overall length 33 1/2". Condition very good noting slight warp in shaft. Circa 1850.

*234. 19TH CENTURY INVOICE FROM NEW BEDFORD SHIP OUTFITTER. Single
sheet of paper(8"x9") with upper portion printed with image of a ship and merchant info
"John McCullough/dealer in....New and Old Chains, Anchors, & c./SHIPS BOUGHT AND
SOLD/New Bedford, Mass...". Dated Dec 18, 1886. Hand written list of items including
sails & try pot and their prices. Condition excellent.

*235. SINGLE SAILOR"S VALENTINE in a 13 1/4" wide octagonal wood box. Was
once part of a large double valentine. Center has a large purple flower that is surround-
ed by numerous different shell designs. Overall condition very nice noting just a few
shells loose from old hyde glue having dried out. Has designs and shells that are a bit
unusual and not commonly seen. Circa 1860.

*236. UNFINISHED 19TH CENTURY TOOTH that is likely the work of
artist H.M.E. Phillips who is listed and illustrated in Stuart Frank's
"Dictionary of Scrimshaw Artists". Nicely prepared tooth with cut base and smoothly polished fin-
ish. 6 1/4"l. x 2 3/4"w. Very tip meticulously engraved all around with delicate filigree design.
Upper center of one side depicts Napoleon's Tomb and reverse has house, trees, fence, etc within
same style border. Light, even age color mixing with nice age yellow. Condition fine.
