*226. SHIP IN A BOTTLE WITH ORIGINAL FANCY DISPLAY STAND. Over the years
have had several examples by this artisan who, I believe, worked in the Wales area of
England in the early 1900's. 11" long green tinted bottle almost completely filled with
very detailed four-mast-barque that has blue hull and simulated gun ports. Rigging all
done with artists trade mark bead blocks. Off aft mast she flies signal flags and Union
Jack. Flying from other masts are house flags and pennant with vessel name "Gladys".
Bottle nicely fitted into original wood fretwork stand. Condition overall excellent. Artist
often used variations of this type stand which, due to their overall delicacy had low sur-
vival rates. This one quite good having just few tiny details chipped off. Original varnish
finish now with crackelure throughout. A very nice example.

*227. WONDERFUL 19TH CENTURY FIGUREHEAD OF A YOUNG MIDSHIPMAN. Very nice-
ly carved in a very displayable size measuring 36" tall. He is wearing his deep
blue, 3/4 length jacket, white pants and a collared white shirt with blue kerchief
and gilt pin. His right arm and hand is at his side and under his left armpit is a
book that was likely a navigational log which midshipmen were expected to
keep. He is standing on a portion of scroll and leaf carving where it attached to
vessel. Condition overall excellent retaining a nice mix of original and old
repaint. Just a delightful depiction of a handsome young sailor. Unusual and
very desirable subject matter in figurehead carving.
