*205. A VERY ATTRACTIVE, 19TH CENTURY, POLYCHROME COLORED
TOOTH. One side has along bottom three different views of a sailing ship. The
water which goes completely around the base of the tooth is colored green.
Above the vessels are two pots of delicate flowers and two small trees. All the
leaves are colored green and flowers are red and gold. Pots also with red high-
lights. Reverse with port view of a ship that has another pot of delicate flowers
above it. Everything on this side also colored like first side. 5 1/4" tall x 2 1/2"

12 1/4". Diameter at top 1 5/8". Has two deeply incised lines decorat-
ing upper portion. Crudely cut into very top are initials
"DWO/SHIP/CM". These letters appear absolutely authentic to me and could denote ownership by a sailor
aboard the Morgan but there is no way to prove that. Condition fine. Great age patina. Circa 1850.

*209. 20TH CENTURY SCRIMSHAW TOOTH...CHARLES W. MORGAN. Exact tooth illus-
trated page 52 in Flayderman's "Scrimshaw and Scrimshanders". Desirable size and shape
measuring 7 1/2" high x 3 1/2" wide. This is a 19th century tooth that the artist smoothed
one side only leaving reverse in natural state as when it came out of whale. Front with lower
half depicting a sailor seated on a barrel while he smokes a pipe and wears a straw hat.
Above him is a seagull, the port view of a ship with old English caption below "Charles W.
Morgan". The lower right corner is signed "FRANK". The quality of the engraving is absolute-
ly remarkable with attention paid to the most minute details. Condition excellent. Side that
was engraved with lighter patina than reverse which was left untouched and has a beautiful
deep age color. Has a simple wood display stand. This is the work of very well known
Portuguese/Azorian artist Frank Barcelos who came to America and settled in the New
Bedford area. He began his career as an illustrator and the professional quality of work on
this tooth bears that out. I would guess this piece would date at least back to 1960's. I
bought it from Norm 34 years ago and was so attracted to the quality and subject that I just always kept it
around and never offered it until now. Has to rank amongst the very best examples of Frank's work. 5975.00
