*202. EXTREMELY RARE EMBROIDERED AMERICAN SAILOR'S SEA BAG. Large size linen
bag measuring 20" diameter x 36" deep. Profusely hand embroidered
throughout with American monuments and vessels, signal flags, stars
including a large one on bottom, flowers and vines, seam piping, etc. Overall
condition quite good considering the delicate nature of an item like this.
One side showing more wear and fading than the other especially on one of the American
pilot or privateer schooners. Very top edge with torn section that is now missing. No
drawstring. This is an extremely rare piece of nautical Americana. Few were ever done
this elaborately and those that were had low survival rate due to harsh elements they
were subjected to during hard years at sea. Only a handful of examples like this known
to exist. Ex: Welles Henderson collection.

*203. SCRIMSHAW TOOTH WITH VICTORIAN LADY wearing a fancy outfit and hat of the
period. All done in polychrome colors. Have had work by this artisan before and an example of
his work illustrated bottom right on page 57 in Flayderman's "Scrimshaw and Scrimshanders".
Sometimes this artisan used a symbol that resembles a Union Jack to his work...this tooth does
not have it but I am positive it's the same scrimshander. Length 5 1/2" x 2"wide. Condition
excellent. Nice patina. Circa 1860.
