*190. ALL WHALEBONE CARPENTER"S SQUARE. Fashioned from a single
piece of very dense grain whalebone. Section that is held against a board 1 1/8"w. x
4 1/8"h. x 5/8" thick. Blade portion for line drawing 1 3/8"w. x 5"l. x 1/4" thick.
Overall length 6 1/4". Condition excellent. Very nice age color throughout. Exact
piece illustrated page 119 in Welles Henderson's book "Jack Tar A Sailor's Life". A
rare, 19th century scrimshaw tool and quite unusual to find made from a single
piece of whalebone. Circa 1840.

*191. POLYCHROME TOOTH SCRIMSHAW CARVED BOTH SIDES. One side
with half portrait of a young woman wearing a fancy dress. She is within an oval
border that itself is within a rectangular frame with fancy corners. All nicely col-
ored in red, green, tan and black. Reverse with full portrait of young man in
princely attire wearing a sword and carrying a walking stick. All meticulously
colored in red, green and black. Almost solid and quite broad tooth measuring 5
1/2"h. x 3"w. Condition excellent. Great age patina. Circa 1850.

*192. 19TH CENTURY MARINE CHRONOMETER. 56 hour. 4 1/2" diameter silvered face
signed "BARRAUD 41 Cornhill/No. 5152 LONDON". Roman numerals. Blued steel hour,
minute, second and up/down hands. Heavy brass housing, gimbal and locking device. 6
3/4" x 6 3/4" x 7" mahogany box with original top lid. Front inset with ivory disc
engraved with serial number "5132". Multi pointed inset star around keyhole. Sides fit-
ted with drop style brass carrying handles. Condition excellent throughout. The
Barraud name of instrument makers goes back to the mid 1700's. This chronometer
likely from shop of Paul Hilton Barraud who worked at the 41 Cornhill address from
1851-1875. No outer storage box.

*193. CHARMING AND ELEGANT 19TH CENTURY WHALEBONE BUSK WITH FULL
POLYCHROME COLORING. Beautifully scrimshaw carved with several distinct panels
depicting a heart & flowers, pot with flower, monument with
initials "M.S.", a bird in a tree and a butterfly. Everything
done within floral and leaf borders. All meticulously colored in
red, green, blue, yellow, brown and black. 13"l. x 1 3/4"w. Exact piece illustrated pg. 106 in Welles
Henderson's book "Jack Tar A Sailor's life". Also sold at Richard Bourne sale, March 1989, lot 9. Condition
excellent noting a stabilized age crack in top section. A very, very pretty example. Rare to find polychrome
colored scrimshaw executed using such a variety of colors.

*194. BEAUTIFUL LARGE, 19TH CENTURY, SPERM WHALE TOOTH WITH UNFINISHED SCENE. Great
size and shape measuring 8"l. x 3"w. Nice heavy, straight tooth with broad sur-
face the entire length. Tooth was beautifully prepared with entire surface com-
pletely smoothed and polished. Has about 70% of what would have developed
into a very desirable scene depicting a harbor with mountainous background.
There is a fort to the right and ships in harbor. In center two men are near a
palm tree. The tooth is actually signed at far lower right "B. West". Condition
excellent. Light, even age color mixed with nice yellow patina. A very handsome specimen.

*195. 19TH CENTURY HALF HULL OF SCHOONER YACHT. Very handsome hull design with clipper bow
and wine glass stern. Made using alternating lifts of pine and mahogany. Topside painted black and bottom
in natural varnish finish. Length 20". Has added pieces to simulate
keel. Mounted on original green backboard with natural mahogany edg-
ing. 6 1/4" x 26 1/2". Maker used unique method to attach model to
board in that it can be easily removed by pivoting a few small brass
tabs set into the back. Condition excellent noting a very small repair near the rudder area of vessel. Nice age
color throughout. A sweet little model.

*196. 19TH CENTURY AMERICAN WHALING HARPOON.
Classic toggle type head that has hand cut letters "WB"
denoting that it was used on waist boat. Overall length 37 1/2". Open cone that is forged integral to shaft.
Overall condition very good.
