*174. DOUBLE SAILOR'S VALENTINE WITH PROVENANCE. Each of the hinged octagonal cedar cases meas-
ures 9"wide. Left side with slogan "A PRESENT FROM BARBADOS". Right
side with heart, flower and typical array of colorful sea shells. Condition fine,
original and really about as good as can be found. Just 2-3 small shells dis-
lodged and loose in case. Comes with history stating Captain Sam Buchanan
from Rose Valley, Prince Edward Island purchased this valentine as a gift for
his wife. He sailed the schooner Matilda that plied the West Indies trade.
Overall a very, very nice example.

*175. 19TH CENTURY SCRIMSHAW TOOTH WITH A BUILDING AND A SHIP. One side with
image of 19th century city building that has name on it "SAILORS HOME". Great look-
ing five story building with classic cupola that has a man on top holding a large pen-
nant. I'm quite sure it is the sailors home built circa 1842 at 190 Cherry St., New
York. Reverse with stbd stern view of an American ship that is within a border of leafy
vines. Nice solid tooth measuring 5 3/4"l. x 2 1/4"w. Condition excellent. Great patina.
A nice old tooth with very interesting subject matter.

standing while reading a letter. He is nicely dressed in short jacket, vest and plaid
pants. Other tooth with well dressed female in riding attire/habit. She is waving with
one hand while holding a riding crop in the other. 5 1/4"l. x 2 3/8"w. Condition fine.

*178. UNUSUALLY LARGE SCRIMSHAW CANE with whalebone shaft that is flute
carved on upper half. Diameter at
top of shaft 1" tapering to a rugged
7/16" at tip. Beautifully carved, octagonal shaped, whale
ivory handle that is 3" long by 2" diameter. Very top inlaid with diamond shaped piece of mother of pearl
shell. Overall length 36". Condition superb. Circa 1850. Quite impressive in this large size.

*179. EARLY STYLE BRAND WHALE GUN WITH WOOD STOCK. Number one size with 7/8" bore. 20"l.
octagonal/round iron barrel with long ramrod sleeve on under-
side. Muzzle loading and percussion fired. 36"l. overall. Wood
stock with iron butt plate. Condition very good noting a small
old chip missing from lower back edge of stock. It is believed
these earlier models may have been made by the firm Allen
Thurber & Co., Worcester, Mass. Circa 1850-60.

*180. MATCHED PAIR OF CARVED PATRIOTIC PLAQUES. Nice Americana probably
dating circa 1870-80. Both carved mahogany with each measuring
22"w. x 25"h. One depicting classic raised wing American Eagle with
arrows and a branch in his talons. He is beneath 13 stars and holds a
"E PLURIBUS UNUM" banner in his beak. Other plaque is American
shield with carved stripes and 13 stars above. Condition overall excel-
lent. Original natural wood finish that has acquired nice age color
throughout. My guess is that these were probably displayed in an
armory or some other similar type venue. Very attractive carvings in a
