*155. SCRIMSHAW TOOTH WITH SUPERB WHALING MOTIFS. Circa 1840.
One side with very desirable whaling scene depicting
stbd view of whaleship and three of her longboats trying
to capture an enraged Sperm whale. One boat and its
men being tossed in air by whale's flukes. Some red col-
oring in water and spout areas of whale. Reverse carved
with a large Sperm whale with red coloring at spout
area. 5 1/2"l. x 2 1/4" w. Condition excellent. We sold this tooth back in 1982(cat. 16, lot 21) and recently
bought it back from that collector. A classic piece of 19th century scrimshaw.

*156. PAIR OF SCRIMSHAW TEETH BY BANKNOTE ENGRAVER. Each tooth is
5 1/2"l. x 2 1/4"w. Both done front and back with beautifully
dressed females within fancy oval borders. One done with lady
seated at a table reading a book. Other shows 3/4 female portrait
and reverse two scenes depict a lady that is likely praying for the
safe return of her sailor spouse. As typical with this artist all
border and edging work of fabulous quality with delicate, lacy
details. Condition very fine. Desirable age color throughout.
Mounted on a nice lignum vitae base. A lovely pair of teeth by
this well known and prized artist. The pair

*157. ULTIMATE QUALITY SCRIMSHAW CANE. Beautifully carved and assembled by a very talented arti-
san. The whalebone shaft is 25 1/2"l. with upper portion being octagonally shaped and decorated with 5
deeply incised lines. Below that is a 12" section of deep carved, diamond knurl, design bordered by another
5 deeply incised lines. Upper 8 1/2" of
cane is made of alternating pieces of
octagonally shaped whale ivory and
baleen. The whale ivory handle is 2 3/4"
l. x 1 5/8" diameter. The entire border of the knob carved with turk's head knot motif. Very top inlaid with a
baleen disc. Overall length 34". Condition superb noting that it had a metal tip fitted over end that is now
missing. I have a virtually identical example by the same maker in my own collection. Circa 1850. Represents
the highest skill level found in scrimshaw cane making.

*158. SUPERB BRITISH SEA SERVICE PISTOL. Handsome flintlock pistol fitted with swivel type ramrod
and belthook that is stamped with a crown. Lock marked with a Crown
over "WR"(William IV) and another stamp of a crown and arrow. 9" barrel
with several marks including three crowns one of which is over "GR" and
an arrow. Stock with several stamped markings including one denoting
ownership by the Board of Ordnance. Overall length 15 1/2". All brass fur-
niture including butt tang, trigger guard, ramrod sleeve, side plate and
nose cone. Condition near perfect having just minor storage bruises. Probably never issued for actual use.
Circa 1830. It would be difficult to find a better example.

*159. ELEGANT CASED SET OF STRAIGHT RAZORS WITH CAPTAIN & VESSEL NAMES. Each fitted
with meticulously carved ivory handles that are decorated with silver pins. The
5 3/4" l. blades are etched one side with port view of paddle steamship "VICTO-
RIA". Reverse of each etched within frosted panels with the
name "Captn W. H. Draper". Blades also stamped with crown
over "WR" and maker's name "Joseph Rodgers &
Sons/Cutler's to Their Majesties/No. 6 Norfolk
Street/Sheffield. Overall length when open 10". Original deep
maroon leather storage case with red velvet interior. Condition near mint noting
one small repair to the very tip of one of the ivory slab handles. This exact pair of razors illustrated page 374
in Flayderman's book "The Bowie Knife Unsheathing an American Legend". Superb quality, as always by the
famed Rodgers firm, and quite desirable with the ship and captain both identified.
