HEARTS. Hinged, octagonal shaped cedar boxes each measuring 9" wide.
Overall width when fully opened 18". Both sides with typical array of color-

them from fitting tightly when closed. Very pretty example.

*130. FINE QUALITY, 19TH CENTURY SCRIMSHAW TOOTH CARVED BOTH
SIDES. One side depicts port view of naval vessel flying large variant of British
flag. Instead of Union Jack being in upper inside corner/canton it extends the
entire hoist of the flag. Reverse with wonderful folky depiction of a young female
with her head tilted. She is wearing a pearl necklace and long gloves with her
evening dress that is also adorned with several bows. She also wears a hat that is
embellished with flowers and flowing ribbons. This is a very charming and desir-
able female portrait. 6"l. x 2 3/4"w. Condition excellent. Fabulous deep age color
throughout. Circa 1850.

*131. VERY UNUSUAL WHALE IVORY AND TORTOISE SHELL WALKING STICK. The entire tapered
shaft made using alternating discs of whale ivory and tortoise shell. Handle nicely carved into classic
clenched fist form that has been inlaid around wrist
area with eight diamond shaped tortoise inlays. Very
end fitted with protective brass tip. Overall length 35".
Condition remarkably fine noting that just two of
ivory discs toward bottom of shaft have small chunks missing which exposes the steel rod that they are fit-
ted over. It is very rare to find a scrimshaw cane with a shaft made using whale ivory. Circa 1850.

*132. 19TH CENTURY WHALEBONE BUSK WITH WHALING SCENE. We sold this piece back in 1981(cat-
alog 15, lot 63) and recently bought it back from that collector. 14 5/8"l. x 1 3/4"w. Large, 6 5/8"l., center
panel depicts stbd view of whaling bark with mountainous islands in background. In foreground are two
longboats chasing Sperm whales. One boat being
capsized by an enraged whale. To right of scene is a
large fouled anchor. The left has a partial scene of
what appears to have been a sailor near a building.
This end was somehow damaged causing the upper part of the picture to be mostly lost. A clever scrimshan-
der might be able to improve this upper area based on what is visible. Otherwise condition very good and
bone has acquired lovely age color throughout. Modestly priced at
