mint with all brass retaining original lacquer

*126. PROFUSELY ENGRAVED PAIR OF SCRIMSHAW TEETH BY A HIGHLY SKILLED ARTISAN. Each
tooth measures 6 1/2"l. x 3"w. Very charming scenes with one tooth depicting a sailor
releasing a bird that has an envelope in its beak. Other tooth shows female with arms
out stretched to receive letter being delivered by the bird. The
sailor is on a tropical island with his ship in the background. The
female is in the countryside with a basket at her feet. Both
scenes completely surrounded in foliate, bow and scroll motifs.
Reverse of sailor tooth with stbd view of ship that is entirely sur-
rounded by foliate and floral designs. Reverse of female tooth has
small country home that is also completely framed with fancy
designs matching other tooth. The open end of each tooth was
custom fitted, during the period, with padded cushions that were probably for pins as it is likely these teeth
were gifts from the sailor to his spouse. A fascinating pair of 19th century teeth by a very accomplished
engraver who really wanted to showcase his skills. The pair
