*110. BEAUTIFULLY ENGRAVED CAPSTAN COVER & ORIGINAL PHOTOS FROM REVENUE CUTTER
"U.S.S. LEVI WOODBURY". 17" diameter bronze cover boldly engraved with large
fancy letters "U.S.S./LEVI WOODBURY/1863". Below that are dou-
ble stars and an elaborate scroll design. Above engraved with
maker name "American Ship Windlass Co./Providence RI". Also
marked with several patent dates. Also included is period photo
showing port view of vessel with original caption below "U.S.
Revenue Steamer Levi Woodbury". Also has photographer name
"Black Photo". Size 12" x 16". Overall size framed 22" x 26".
Also have a period photo showing the crew posing on the deck of the Woodbury. In the
background the top of the capstan is visible showing the distinct
rounded shape of this cover. On reverse is photographers backmark "L.V. NEWELL &
CO....No 1 High Street, Portsmouth, N.H.". Photo size 8" x 9 1/2". Overall size framed
13" x 15". Condition of everything excellent. Originally built 1863 at Philadelphia as
Revenue Cutter "Mahoning" vessel was renamed Levi Woodbury in June 1873. Vessel
went on to be longest surviving Civil War era built screw-propelled ship to remain on
active duty. She patrolled the Maine coast during the late 19th/early 20th centuries with
her last cruise being along that coast in May, 1915. A terrific grouping of items from this well known United
States Revenue Cutter.

*111. UNITED STATES COAST GUARD OFFICERS' SWORD. Same style as the model 1852 Naval officers'
sword. Slightly curved 32" blade etched one side with scroll & floral motifs, a shield & anchor, stars, ship's
mast and owner name "Lee R. Scott 1911". Reverse with rope, anchor,
American Eagle, scroll & floral designs and a banner with letters "U.S.C.G.".
Gilt brass hilt with fish skin grips wrapped with decorative wire. top of pom-
mel decorated with American Eagle within a border of stars. Top of knuckle
guard and quillon in form of Dolphin head. Pierced guard with oak leaves and
acorns and a banner with initials "USCG". Original sword knot still attached
where guard attaches to pommel. Overall length 37 1/2". Black leather scab-
bard with three gilt brass mounts. Top mount with square knot and Coast Guard shield. Middle mount with
square knot and drag cast in form of Dolphin. Throat and middle mount with carrying rings. Overall condi-
tion of everything very fine. Coast Guard wasn't formed until 1915 when Revenue Cutter Service and U.S.
Lifesaving Service merged. The date on the sword is commemorative to when Lee R. Scott enlisted in the
Navy. He later enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard on March 25, 1925. A fine example of scarce sword.  1295.00
*112. UNITED STATES COAST GUARD ENSIGN from the 1915-1953 period.
All wool bunting with maker stencil and tag "ANNIN & CO". Size #4 for small to
medium boats. 30" x 50". Upper left with American Eagle beneath an arch of 13
stars. Vertical red and white stripes and Coast Guard logo over crossed anchors.
Condition excellent having just scattered small holes but all very sound. Nice age
color with white areas having turned a mellow tan color that is most attractive.
Great looking U.S.C.G. flag from the early period.

*113. AMERICAN SCRIMSHAW TOOTH WITH WHALING SCENE AND FAMOUS NAVAL VESSEL. One
side with scene showing stbd view of whaleship with all boats lowered and
actively engaged in Sperm whaling. Dramatic depiction of enraged Sperm
Whales flipping a longboat high in the air causing men to be tossed into sea.
There are some red highlights on boat and in sea where Whale is being lanced.
Reverse with huge port view of ship-of-the-line Pennsylvania. On bow are let-
ters"PA" and on stern "UNS". Off bow is pilot
schooner passing a marker. Also some red highlights on this side. Length 7" x
3" max width. Fine condition. Terrific age color. The Pennsylvania, launched
1837, was the largest sailing ship ever built for the U.S. Navy. Exact tooth
illustrated page 71 in Flayderman's "Scrimshaw and Scrimshanders". Also
was part of Meylert Armstrong collection that was acquired by Norm in the
1960's. A high quality and very important piece of American scrimshaw.
