Items 107 to 112 represent a rare offering
of important objects related to the
"United States Revenue Cutter Service"
*107. Model 1834 REVENUE CUTTER OFFICER'S SWORD. Superb example with great pedigree having
been in the famous Philip Medicus American
Sword Collection and illustrated page 144 in

page 173 Peterson's "The American Sword

ribbon containing word "LIBERTY". Reverse with American shield bordered
by stars. Cross guard decorated with leaf motifs. Hinged, gilt brass counter-

bard fitted with three mounts. Throat engraved with American Eagle and fitted with frog

Norm Flayderman had made when he purchased that famous collection in the early 1950's. A fine and
extremely rare American sword.

*108. U.S. REVENUE MARINE CUTLASS...TO DATE THE ONLY KNOWN AUTHENTIC SPECIMEN. A vari-
ant of the rare U.S. Navy model 1861 naval officer's cutlass having the scalloped guard pierced
with the letters "USR" instead of USN. During the
Civil War the Cutter Service was transferred from
the Department of the Treasury, to control by the
Navy Department. In June of 1862 just 12 of these
cutlasses were ordered from Ames as an emer-
gency requirement to fill the need for a Revenue officer's sword. The 26" curved blade with
broad fuller is in near mint, original, bright polish condition. Large brass basket guard retaining
most all its original bright gilt finish. Overall length 34". Original black leather scab-
bard with incised lines on front and copper rivets holding seam on reverse. It has the
correct gilt brass, raised star at the very tip. Seldom is the correct star found on the
scabbard of the 1861 naval officer's cutlass, more often than not a simple star is engraved on a
brass disc and then added to the sheath of a standard issue cutlass. The proper star is raised and
very detailed having a stippled background and a ropework border. Still attached to the gilt brass frog stud is
the original leather frog for attaching to a belt. This exact sword illustrated page 165 in John Hamilton's
book "The Ames Sword Company". In the caption it erroneously states that the blade has the Ames marking
but it never had and I have a letter from Norm Flayderman stating that the caption was an error. Overall con-
dition of everything superb. Obviously extremely rare but also aesthetically a very, very handsome sword.
*109. NEW REGULATION REVENUE CUTTER SERVICE SWORD...CIRCA 1870. Straight,
double edged blade 29"l. and beautifully etched both sides with floral, scroll, Treasury Seal and
rope motifs. One side with old English letters "U.S.R.M.". Top of blade with American Eagle on
one side and makers name on reverse "Ames Mfg Co/Chicopee/Mass". All gilt brass hilt with
fishskin grips wrapped in twisted wire. Cross guard with scroll designs at each end and in cen-
ter letters "USRM". Large counter guard with spread wing American Eagle in high relief. Smaller
counter guard on reverse. Rounded pommel with four leaves in relief. Overall length 36". Black
leather scabbard with three mounts. Top engraved with Treasury Seal and has shell shaped frog
stud. Middle mount engraved with large fouled anchor. Condition of everything very fine. This
model Revenue sword was made by a few different maker's but Ames version considered to be
the nicest looking example.
