*93. 18K GOLD PRESENTATION POCKET WATCH TO AN AMERICAN CAPTAIN FROM THE CANADIAN
GOVERNMENT. Beautifully engraved on the back of the case "Presented by the/ Government of Canada/to
Captain Osborne Master of the/American Barque C.E.Jayne of/New York/in recogni-
tion of his/gallant exertions in the/rescue of the survivors/of the Wrecked Ship/N.W.
Blethen of Yarmouth/Nova Scotia/on the 2nd August 1876". Two inch diameter,
white porcelain face with Roman numerals and blued steel hour, minute and sec-
ond hands. Key wind. Inside of all the gold covers fully hallmarked with maker
mark "HDG", "18", "A", leopard head and serial number "4437". Condition fine. The
ship N.W. BLETHEN sailed out of Baltimore on July, 25, 1876 for London. On the
30th she encountered a gale and violent sea that ultimately washed all hands over-
board on the 31st. All on board, 21 in number, except the second mate and three
seamen were drowned. Will supply copies of second mate's detailed account of the incident including being
rescued by Captain Osborne of New York. He also notes his Captain & wife and two children were all were
drowned. A fine lifesaving award to an American sea captain.

first draw signed "U.S. Superior Signal Telescope/Beckel Brothers New-York". Length
closed 10" with 4 draw tubes extending to
34". 2 1/4" diameter tube. Sliding cover
for eyepiece and sliding sun tube for
objective end. Dark brown leather covering professionally restored with correct stitching
at seam.Optics produce clear, erect images. Affixed to sun tube is large silver plate, 3" x
4", that is beautifully engraved "Presented to/Mr Alexr Leslie/by E.P. Corwin and
friends/for heroic conduct in saving/the life of E.P. Corwin/July 18th 1865". Exact item
illustrated page 123 in Klamkin's "Marine Antiques".

engraved inscription on draw tube "Presented by the British
Government/to/Mr. Thomas M. Stocker/first mate of the
American Ship "Ann E. Hooper"/of Baltimore in acknowledg-
ment of his gallant/conduct in assisting to save the lives of
the/Master and survivors of the Crew of the Barque/"Ouzel
Galley" of Dublin on the 4th April 1859". Also has maker's name
"Troughton & Simms/London". German silver fittings and
leather cover on tapered barrel. Length closed 26 1/2" extending
to 37 ". Sliding cover for eyepiece and cap for objective lens. Original dove-
tailed mahogany storage case with large inset GS plaque engraved "Mr.
Thomas M. Stocker". Condition of everything fine noting professional restora-
tion of the leather covering on barrel. Have copy of article published in May 7,
1859 "Baltimore Sun" that fully describes the incident and specifically mentions Stoker.

BOSTON BARK. Huge size measuring 39" closed with sin-
gle draw extending to 48" All German silver fittings and
leather covering on tapered barrel. Sliding cover for eyepiece
and cap for
objective lens. Draw tube beautifully engraved "Presented by
the British Government/to/Captain P. Weaver of the
American/Barque "Union Jack" of Boston in/acknowledgment
of his humanity and kindness/to the Master and Crew of the Brigantine/"Napoleon the Third" of Saint
John's/Newfoundland whom he rescued from/their sinking Vessel on the 4th February 1863". Also has mak-
ers name "Troughton & Simms/London". Original dovetailed mahogany stor-
age box with inset GS plaque inscribed "Captain P. Weaver". Condition of
everything very good noting the usual deterioration of the stitching resulting
in most of seam on leather covering being separated. Seldom were these
scopes presented in this large size. Handsome and impressive looking item.
