*88. MINT CONDITION AMERICAN NAVAL SURGEON SWORD WITH EAGLE POMMEL. Circa 1825. Even
though it has appearance of classic bird's head pommel there is actually an American Eagle and Shield on
very top of pommel. Straight 26" blade with full length fuller and tri-color decorations in bright blue, gilt and
frosted etch. One side decorated with various arms, pole & cap, foliate designs, anchor and gilt Eagle with "E
Pluribus Unum" banner. Reverse with more foliate
designs, anchor, etc. Gilt brass hilt with decorative
knucklebow, full length backstrap, disc quillon,
langets with relief anchors and solid ivory grip with
diagonal flute carving. Overall length 30 1/2". Gilt
brass scabbard beautifully engraved the full length with varying foliate designs surrounding an American
Eagle with shield, ship's mast with arms, crossed cannons and an anchor. Fitted with two carrying rings.
Condition is "flat out mint" having 99+ percent of all its original finishes. This exact sword illustrated and
discussed pages 6 & 47-48 in Pete Tuite's book "U.S. Naval Officers Their Swords and Dirks". A very rare and
beautiful American naval sword, especially in this condition.

*89. RARE AND IMPORTANT SIGNED SCRIMSHAW TOOTH BY
SHIP'S SURGEON WILLIAM RODER -
ICK. Beautifully executed depiction of
an active Sperm Whaling scene with two
whaleships in background and several
longboats capturing Sperm Whales. In
center of scene is large Sperm Whale in furious battle with two of the longboats.
Signed lower right in tiny meticulous lettering "W.L. Roderick". Length 7 3/4" x 2" max. width. As usual with
examples known by Roderick the back of the tooth not smooth but in its natural tex-
ture. Condition fine with nice age color throughout. William Lewis Roderick was the
ship's surgeon on three voyages aboard the bark "Adventure" of London, 1847-56.
Exact tooth illustrated page 6 in Peter Tuite's book "U.S. Naval Officers Their Swords
and Dirks". Very few examples by Roderick known and work by him long considered to
be one of scrimshaw collecting's prize pieces.
