elaborately carved teak or oak backboard. Teeth all from same
whale with each measuring prox. 5"l x 2"w. Perfectly shaped for
intended use with each having perfect curve so when mounted
with tip in upward position tooth acts as a hook so garments
can't slip off. Heavy, 1 1/2" thick, backboard all deep relief
carved depicting entwined Dolphins. 39 1/2"l x 9 1/2"w. Superb, professional quality workmanship. Condition
perfect with backboard in original varnish finish that has acquired a beautiful deep age patina. Would date
circa 1860-70. The very best example of a very rare scrimshaw form.

early example dating circa 1760. All mahogany, 20"l, index arm with brass housing
for index mirror. Eyepiece with double peep sights and pivoting cover. Front and
back horizon glasses, backsight and two movable glass shades. Blank ivory name-
plate. Beautiful inset boxwood scale. Condition of everything superb. Fabulous age
color throughout. Brass still retaining traces of original lacquer finish. Represents
the most collectible form of early octants. Examples like this seldom show up on
today's market.

*80. INLAID SAILOR'S KNIFE AND FID. Teak handles inlaid on all 8 surfaces
with mother-of-pearl, German silver and abalone shell. Numerous motifs including
anchors, decanters, cups, stars, shields,
crescent moon, etc. All German silver
mounts and protruding pins. Beautifully made pivoting shackles at
top of pommel. Knife with 6 1/2" clip point blade. Overall length 11
1/2". Has german silver sheath with belt hook attached to back. Fid
with matching inlays could also have been used as a sharpening rod.
Overall length 12". Condition of both excellent. These are exact
pieces illustrated page 33 in Norm Flayderman's book "The Bowie
Knife Unsheathing an American Legend". Another similar example is illustrated in Peterson's "American
Knives" which was published in 1958. Interesting and quite handsome set.

*81. 19TH CENTURY FIGUREHEAD IN RARE SMALL SIZE. Beautiful
quality carving of an attractive young female with her hair in a bun and
with a flower on the left side. She is wearing a somewhat low cut dress
and cape. Around the neckline of dress is decorative carved border. She
also wears a necklace with some type of cross around her neck. At the
base where she rests is the top of the classic style ship's scroll carving.
Overall ht. 20". Condition of carving excellent throughout. Her paint is
old, probably late 19th century, repaint that is worn in areas and flaking
in others. Paint very attractive as is, especially in the head, face and hair
area. This is a lovely example of a 19th century female figurehead and especially so in
this charming size.

shaped ebony handle and there is a wide band of silver where handle joins tusk. Tip fitted
with protective metal cover. Condition
fine. Tusk with great age patina. The 4" x
6" photo is mounted on fancy photogra-
phers card and shows a well dressed
young man posing while holding this exact cane. Reverse with photographers logo/infor-
mation and with hand written information "Peter Duncan/Plumber/1892". The cane, of
course, pre-dates that being circa 1860. A quality Narwhal stick that is extra appealing
with the period photo showing it with its owner.
