*25. LARGE AND IMPRESSIVE PAIR OF BOLDLY ENGRAVED
SCRIMSHAW TEETH...KING AND QUEEN OF THE SEA. I've had a cou-
ple of pieces by this artist before but this pair, far and away, are the best
examples I ever had. Examples of his work
illustrated pages 6 & 75 in Flayderman's
"Scrimshaw and Scrimshanders". Nice full
shaped teeth measuring 7"l. x 3"w. One tooth
with female riding on the back of a Dolphin
with caption above "THE QUEEN OF THE SEA".
Reverse with port/stern view of a large
American naval ship. Other with semi-clad
bearded male standing by several fish while holding a trident on a pole with large
flag having caption "THE KING OF THE SEA". Reverse with very large port view of an American naval ship. I
believe the the figures to represent the mythological characters Amphitrite/Salacia and Poseidon/Neptune.
Both teeth mounted on quality 19th century teak bases that were hollowed out on underside so they could
be weighted with lead. Condition of everything very fine. Great age color throughout. The pair

*28. SIGNED EBONY OCTANT. Length of flat brass index arm 13". Double peep
sight with pivoting shade. Three movable shades, two horizon glasses and a back-
sight. Ivory scale, vernier, blank name plate and note
pad on back of frame. Signed on index arm "W. & S.
JONES/30 Holborn London". Stepped case with old

instrument dates circa 1830.
