*19. ALL BRASS PIERCE DARTING GUN WITH HARPOON AND BOMB LANCE. Wonderful complete
example with correct, 7/8" diameter, bomb lance and
toggle head darting iron that has head deep stamped
with maker's mark "J.D.D.". Also has breech loaded
shell that propelled the bomb lance upon impact with
whale. Harpoon also has its rare wooden sheath that
is covered with painted sail cloth. Bomb lance length 15 3/4". Harpoon length 36". Overall length of brass
gun 17 1/2". Top of screw-on/off barrel stamped with maker's mark "E. Pierce". Still has 57" long section of
original, 1 3/4" diameter, wood pole. Overall length with harpoon in place 96". Condition excellent only need-
ing the thin steel rod that acted as a trigger for the firing mechanism. The small leather cover for the breech
mostly gone. The harpoon maker James D. Driggs worked in New Bedford, under his own
name, from 1876-1902. It would be hard to find a more original or complete example of this
scarce type of American whaling gun.

descriptions and prices for Pierce Shoulder Gun, bomb lances and Pierce Darting Gun.
Reverse with toggle irons, lances, spades, knives, etc. Mounted in a wood frame with glass
both sides for complete viewing. An identical example illustrated both sides on page 2 in
Lytle's book "Harpoons and other Whalecraft". This one from Barbara Johnson Collection,
sale III, lot 203. Condition excellent. Great whaling ephemera.

*21. ALL BRASS EBENEZER PIERCE, BREECH-LOADING WHALING GUN made circa
1880 by his nephew Frank E. Brown, New
Bedford, Mass. See previous item which
advertises this specific gun. Skeletal type stock cast integral
with the frame. 19 1/2" l. barrel tips down by means of a small
lever on the left side of the gun. Also has a larger lever on
right side that cocks the gun. Has hollow socket at underside
of stock. Serial number "10" deep stamped in several places on gun. Overall length 38". Condition excellent
with just two round-head brass screws replaced. Brass somewhat bright from being cleaned several years
ago. Heavy and quite impressive brass looking whale gun.

*22. RARE 19TH CENTURY SCRIMSHAW POWDER HORN MADE FROM WHALE'S TOOTH. Upper 1/3 of
tooth handsomely carved in tapered octagonal design that is bordered by
a decorative molding. One side with polychrome depiction of American
naval ship. Reverse with classic patriotic design depictiong an American
Eagle over eight draped American Flags, a shield, a drum, two crossed
cannon and canon balls. Flags and shield with red polychrome coloring.
Fitted with inset wood plug at base. Removable top for pouring powder is
replaced using a 19th century turned bone finial. Condition excellent
having just a few chips missing from wood plug. Tooth length 5" x 2
1/2"wide. Overall length 5 3/4". Beautiful age color throughout. Great
quality workmanship. A very rare and attractive scrimshaw item. sold
*23. FOUR BRASS WHALE BOMB LANCES in their original storage
box that is missing its lid. Also has one Winchester No. 8 shell, primer caps and fuses. Three of bombs have
brass tips and tubes and are identical in size measuring 15"l. x 7/8'
diameter. The fourth one is the same diameter but has iron tip with
brass tube and is longer, measuring 18 3/4". All fit into lower portion of
storage box that has center divider that is bored to store four shells.
Condition of everything good. All probably made by Brand.
