*15. 19TH CENTURY RELIEF-CARVED TOOTH depicting a full female portrait within an
elaborate arched border. She is wearing a fancy dress and holding British flags in each
hand. Probably the work of the artist referred to as B. Bifer in Frank's "Dictionary of
Scrimshaw Artists". Unusual feature of this example is that it is done on half a tooth that
was carefully sawn down the middle length wise. This was done when the original work
was executed and it is my guess that somewhere out there is the other half of the tooth
with another relief carved scene on it. Length 6 1/2" x 3"w. Condition excellent. Has two
small holes bored in very lower area that appear period and were likely used for display
purposes. Terrific age patina throughout. Great quality workmanship. Very rare and desir-
able scrimshaw form.
