*1. BONE MODEL OF A WHALEBOAT...FROM THE LLOYD COL -
LECTION. Wonderful little model of a 19th century whaleboat fit-
ted with most all its gear including harpoon, oars, hook, tubs with
line, buckets, etc. The mast is stepped and the rigging is in place.
Length of hull including rudder 7". Mounted on whalebone base
with carved edge and turned feet. Condition excellent. Was part of
famous Lloyd Collection of Prisoner-of-War Artifacts that I handled
in mid 1980's. Item 256 in catalog of collection. Also illustrated
page 132 in Clive Lloyd's book "The Arts and Crafts of Napoleonic
and American Prisoners of War 1756-1816". This obviously was
not P.O.W. work from that era but it is a rare whalebone model of a
whaleboat. A very nice little item that is worthy of a home in the
best of scrimshaw/whaling collections.

*2. VERY RARE CLIPPER SHIP ADVERTISING CARD for the ship Sparkling Wave.
6 1/2"h. x 4"w. Very attractive with nice image depicting stbd view of a clipper ship at
sea. Top with typical fancy lettering "Merchants Express Line for SAN
FRANCISCO...Saturday, March 12th". Below vessel image "The Ship SPARKLING WAVE
Joseph McCart, Commander...Babcock, Cooley & Co., 118 Water St. Messrs De Witt,
Kittle & Co., Agents in San Francisco". Also has printers name "Nesbitt and Co". The
vessel was built 1853 by Mason Barney at Swansea, Mass. She made only two voyages
to San Francisco, one beginning from Philadelphia and the other from New York in
1859. Condition excellent. A very pretty card.

*3. RARE LARGER SIZE BRAND WHALE GUN referred to as number 2 model with 1
1/8" bore. Muzzle loading and percussion fired. In all aspects this is a decidedly larger
gun than the most widely used and encoun-
tered number 1 version. All iron construc-
tion with skeletal style stock. 22'l. octagonal/round barrel with
long ramrod tube mounted to underside. Overall length 38 1/2".
Also has unusual feature of having had the stock, trigger guard
and hammer nickel finished. Generous amounts still intact and mixed with brown age color. Overall condi-
tion very good. This number 2 gun was not only longer but heavier, weighing about 3 1/2 pounds more than
the #1 version. It is my guess this size is much rarer because the extra size was too cumbersome resulting
in boats being equipped with the smaller, more manageable, size.
