*209. BEAUTIFULLY CARVED SCRIMSHAW TOOTH depicting a 3/4 portrait of a female hold-
ing a rose. She is looking back over her left shoulder while wearing an elegant dress with
fancy borders and a bow on the elbow. Her hair done in soft ringlet style with feather hat on
top. 6 1/4"l. x 2 5/8"w. Condition superb. Very desirable age color throughout. I had another
tooth of near identical subject matter by this artist in my 1999 catalog #32, item 65. A
charming 19th century tooth by a very skilled scrimshander.

*210. WHALEBONE SEWING IMPLEMENT WITH CHARMING VERSE scrimshaw carved
around entire surface. Not sure the exact use for
this item that is nicely turned to resemble a
sewing needle case but is not bored out for needle
storage. Bottom section with small finial that is bored through with a tiny hole. Around
cylinder, in dice dot lettering, is verse "REMEMBER ME/WHEN I AM/FAR AWAY 1839". Each
letter alternately polychrome colored in red and green. Length 3 3/4" x 3/8" diameter. Condition fine. Great
age color. A beautiful and charming scrimshaw item.

*211. 19TH CENTURY SHELL VALENTINE in a beautiful quality mahogany veneer
case. 14 1/2" wide. Octagonal shape with glass window set into hinged lid. Quite
unusual style having multi colored shells forming beautiful flowers that are attached
to wire creating appearance that they are floating in the case. Also decorated with
early paper leaves for foliage affect. Condition overall very nice having just typical
few shells broken or lacking but you really have to study it to notice. Exceptional
case covered in richly grained mahogany veneer that has acquired a lovely age
patina. A very attractive example.

*212. PAIR OF SCRIMSHAW TEETH WITH POLYCHROME FEMALES. Each done in
pin prick and line style engraving. Both teeth shaped the same and from same whale
with one measuring 4 5/8" and other a little over 4". One tooth with full standing
young girl in colorful Victorian dress that is just below knee length. Other in
similarly colored dress but with no leg showing. Condition fine. Light, even age
color. Have old dates carefully painted on reverse of each "1880".

*213. 19TH CENTURY CARVED STERNBOARD SECTION done in very deep relief
depicting a serpent moving amongst
rocks and foliage. Exceptional
quality work done from single, 3 1/2" thick, plank. 53" long x
16" maximum height. Has attractive old paint that is
greenish black color. Excellent age patina and desirable
alligatored surface. Overall condition very nice. Likely one
half of vessel's stern decoration with other being mirror of
this but facing other direction. A gutsy looking piece of ship carving.

"MERCANTILE MARINE INSURANCE COMPANY BOSTON" for "Sperm oil and bone on board the British Ship
Isabella at and from Honolulu to New Bedford". Dated Jan 1867. Second policy from "MUTUAL MARINE
INSURANCE COMPANY OF NEW BEDFORD" for oil on Barque Valparaiso, April 1856. Single, printed and
folded, sheets prox 10" x 16". Good condition. Interesting link between British vessels and American whaling
