*204. WHALE IVORY PIE CRIMPER IN THE FORM OF AN ALBATROSS. Handle made using three whale ivory
sections that are joined with baleen spacers. Back two sections nicely decorated with three deep fluted
grooves. Front carved to resemble head of an Albatross with wheel
attached to tip of beak and eyes made using inset ebony with a
silver pin in center. Overall length 8" with 2 1/4"d. whale ivory
wheel that is one of the best carved examples I've come across. All
done with deep, fancy serrations around edge and large pin-wheel
and circle design in center. Condition overall excellent and
original but each of the ivory handle sections have developed
sound age cracks. Nice age color throughout. By the exact same hand as one we handled in 1984 that was
part of the fantastic Bigelow/Howell crimper collection. That one ultimately ended up in the Cohen collection
that was sold by Richard Bourne in 1989. Nice figural example.

*205. CLIFFORD ASHLEY'S WALRUS TUSK CRIBBAGE BOARD. Heavy, 25" long, tusk that has remarkable
relief carving on top, bottom and one edge. Top with six relief
carved panels that are bored for score keeping. Separating
the sections are large faceted stones or glass in red, green
and blue. Toward the tip is a large
carved Walrus with scrimshaw engraving on body. At very end are high relief
letters "CWA". Reverse with three relief carved scenes depicting a Walrus and
C
Polar Bear, an Eskimo in a kayak harpooning a Walrus and two Eskimos hunting
Walrus. Edge with fabulous relief carving of a harpoon. Has
eight, 2 1/2" long, scoring pegs, four being nicely turned from
whalebone and decorated on top with colorful glass matching
those inset into tusk. Other four beautifully fashioned from
whale ivory with each having a carved Walrus head at top. Condition excellent noting two very small bits
missing from large end where it was bored through so lanyard could be attached for hanging. Has decent
display stand with mirror set into bottom allowing underside of tusk to be viewed when mounted. A superb
example of Eskimo carving that was either commissioned by Ashley himself or by an acquaintance who
presented it to him. Important.

*206. RARE SCRIMSHAW RIDING CROP with whale tooth handle. Overall length
25". Has a flexible thin wood shaft almost like a ramrod on an old rifle. Handle
made from a solid 3" tooth that has been octagonally shaped and scrimshaw
decorated at wide end with a folky pin-wheel design. On the top of the tooth is a
lightly engraved Sperm whale that I think was added later but it is so faint that it
really doesn't bother the piece. Condition excellent. Nice age patina. Circa 1840.
Unusual scrimshaw item.
