*187. WHALEBONE YARDSTICK FULLY SCRIMSHAW DECORATED. Superb example that I would rate as the
best I've seen
except that about
4" is missing. The break likely happened in use as there are signs of a quality 19th century repair that
undoubtedly broke again and subsequently the small piece was lost. Both sides profusely engraved with flo-
ral, leaf, vine, willow
tree, diamond and pin-
wheel designs. One side with inset pieces of baleen at different dividing points. Overall length 31 1/4" x 3/4"
wide. Quality of scrimshaw work great and very folky. Nice early example with great age color throughout.
Condition fine noting the lost section. Probably dates circa 1830-40. A very good piece of scrimshaw. SOLD

with rubber all intact and still pliable.
