*160. THREE REMARKABLE WOOD CARVINGS....CAPTAIN WILLIAM HENDLEY. Fabulous quality workman-
ship by a very skilled marine carver. Includes a 22"l.
curved tiller arm decorated with rope twist, rope braid,
turk's head and crown knot motifs. Rear section with
deep carved and gilded lettering "CAPTAIN/WILLIAM
HENDLEY/NORTH SHIELDS/1840". Mounted on a custom
made brass stand. Second item a 24"l. tapered swagger
stick carved the entire length with rope twist design.
Each end with monkey fist or crown knot and center
with simple turk's head style ring. Exact use for third
item a bit of a mystery but I'm quite sure it was a butter
stamp. Upper handle portion with rope twist, turk's-head and crown knot motifs. Bottom with large letters in
high relief "W*H". The letters are inverted so when stamped they appear in their correct order and form
William Hendley's initials. 7 1/2"h. x 5 1/2"w. Everything in fine original condition noting that the tiller was
cracked in a tender area and has an old mend but is missing no wood. All three pieces with desirable age
patina over all surfaces. Just a great set of nautical carvings.

Superbly crafted by a professional boat builder and made using the same techniques
and quality as a full sized version. All mahogany construction with lapstrake hull and
copper fasteners. Both stems joined to keel using classic lap joints. Each end fitted
with buoyancy chambers. Overall length 49" x 18 1/2" wide. Inside length 33". Boat
suspends from two brass davit arms that are fitted with two sets of triple brass
blocks and their rope-work. Way it is set up boat can swing freely so a gentle rocking
motion can be created. The curved brass davit arms fit into 16"h., turned and
tapered, wood bases that are strengthened with added support knees. Both these
columns are attached to a 1 1/2" thick, dog bone shaped, base that is 46"l. x 18 1/2"w.
Condition of everything superb and original with all wood in natural finish and brass
work having nice age patina throughout. It is interesting to note that this item elicit-
