*143. EXTREMELY RARE BRIDGE FRAME SEXTANT signed below the silver scale "Worthington & Allan
London". Classic brass double frame with innovative bridge added for stability
and protection of mirror, optic, etc. 10 1/2" l. flat index arm with owner initials
"P.H.S.". Precision magnifier with spiral thread for adjusting. Index mirror and
seven colored shades. Rosewood handle. Specially shaped mahogany case with
fitted compartments for holding the four optics and an extra eyepiece that has
rotating shades. Inside of lid with instrument dealer label "R.J. Keen...Liverpool".
Condition excellent and original but as found so frame showing overall brass
patina. Nathaniel Worthington took over the shop of the famous Matthew Berge
and with that had Jesse Ramsden's dividing engine. The partnership with James
Allan flourished from 1821-1834. This instrument would be from the early 1820
period. A rare and desirable navigating instrument.

*144. MODEL `OLD TOWN' CANOE IN ORIGINAL CONDITION. Usually referred to as salesman samples but
were also used as incentive items to entice
dealers to place orders large enough to fill a
railway box car which reduced transport costs
and damage from extra handling. This model
made by the company using the same material
and methods as their full size versions. Overall
length 49". Maximum width 9 1/2". Interior all in original varnish finish including ribs, stems and planking.
Two seats with caning, thwarts, fore and aft decks, and inner and outer rails all made of mahogany.
Protective brass strips from deck to keel. Exterior skin with original deep green fin-
ish. Middle section of both sides with shadow painted lettering "OLD TOWN CANOE
OLD  OWN CANOE
CO". Fore and aft bow area with fancy decals giving company info "This Nameplate
CO
Shows This To Be Genuine/Old Town Canoe/Manufactured by/OLD TOWN CANOE
Co/OLD TOWN, MAINE. U.S.A.". Included are two 17" paddles with portraits of Native
Americans painted on the blades. Condition of everything original and excellent hav-
ing just expected bruises, etc that really just add to overall appeal of the piece. A superb example of these
eagerly sought after canoe models. I bought this one at a house sale in Kennebunk, Maine in 1978. Great
New England/Maine item.

*145. VERY RARE, RELIEF CARVED, SPERM WHALE TEETH depicting ancient
tribal people of Scotland known as Picts. Two fabulous large teeth with fully
tattooed, semi-clad male and female figures. Both in standing pose with spears,
the male appearing ready for battle carrying a shield and sword in addition to
his spear. Both figures scrimshaw engraved over their entire bodies to represent
tattoo decorations. The female more heavily covered having sunburst, floral,
insect and other designs. Each tooth 8"l. x 3"w. Condition excellent noting that
female tooth has mended crack in lower front but no part of tooth lost. Both
with magnificent age patina over entire surface. By same artisan as pair illus-
trated page 63 in Flayderman's "Scrimshaw and Scrimshanders". Stuart Frank
also discusses this scrimshander on page 14 in his "Dictionary of Scrimshaw
Artists". A fabulous and important pair of 19th century teeth.

*146. RARE EIGHT DAY MARINE CHRONOMETER. Signed on the 5 1/4" diameter
silvered face "CHARLES FRODSHAM/84 Strand London/No 5029". On either side of
up/down dial are crown devices with anchor and info "By Appointment to the
Queen/Gold Medal of Honour/Paris Exn 1855". Gold hour and minute hands. Blued
steel second and up/down hands. Back plate of chronometer works beautifully
engraved "Charles Frodsham/No 5029/London". Earnshaw type balance. Brass gim-
bal, bowl and locking device. Brazilian rosewood box, 8 1/4" x 8 1/4" x 8 5/8" high,
fully brass bound and with flush mounted carrying handles, two escutcheons and
an ivory plaque engraved "C.F. Frodsham/London/5029". Condition of everything
very nice noting spotting on original lacquer finish on brass. Thin top lid on box
replaced by professional clock cabinet shop. Ivory plaque on box redone due to old
one being damaged. Crisp, clean works that are running fine. Outer storage box a
later replacement. A quite impressive marine chronometer.
