There are several makers with name White listed but none with name Benjamin
so it could be that Benjamin White was the owner. No case. A very impressive

*142. RARE SET OF BRASS CAPSTAN AND WINDLASS
COVERS MADE BY A BATH, MAINE FIRM. Very rare, possi-
bly unique, items that are hand engraved with maker information and marked in bold
lettering "D RY DOCK/N O 2". These letters all very large and deeply engraved in stipple
D
style and each are bordered with cut lines to create shadow effect. The 15" diameter,
dome shaped, capstan cover weighs 15 lbs. and has dry dock
marking plus maker info "THE `HYDE'/PATENTED/FEB. 13,
1877-AUG. 12, 1879/HYDE WINDLASS CO., MAKERS/BATH,
MAINE". The two windlass covers also with bold dry dock marks and basically have
the same maker markings as capstan cover except there are two more engraved
patent dates "AUG 10, 1880-JUNE 3, 1890".
Each of these 22" diameter covers weigh over 50 lbs. Likely made for
use at a prominent and high profile dry dock where the company felt a
great deal of free advertising would result from the fancy engraved infor-
mation they put on each piece. The Bath Maritime Museum has nothing
like these in their
collection. I've owned these since about 1973 and when I bought them I
was told they came from one of the Todd Shipyards, either in Brooklyn
or New Jersey. A quick bit of research shows that their Hoboken facility closed in 1965 and the Brooklyn
facility inherited most of the equipment and auctioned off the rest. Fabulous and very showy maritime
objects. The set of three
