*134. DOUBLE FRAME SEXTANT WITH AUSTRALIAN PRESENTATION. Frame has beautifully engraved sil-
ver strip perfectly fitted to horizontal limb "PRESENTED TO/Captain George
Hyde/by his passengers/per Competitor & Grecian/Port Adelaide Novr 14th 1850".
On either side of inscription are leaf, scroll and cross hatch decorations. Classic
brass double frame with silver scales and maker signature "Troughton London".
Length of reinforced index arm 10". Horizon glass, seven colored glass shades
and swing away magnifier over silver vernier. Ebony handle. Keystone mahogany
box with brass plaque fitted into top of lid. Interior with three optics and two
optic shades. Has spot for two other accessories that are missing but likely were
just wrenches for adjusting the frame. Condition superb with all original finish
still on frame. This instrument pre-dates 1826 which is the year Edward
Troughton entered into partnership with William Simms. Lists found in Ronald
Parsons "Migrant Ships for South Australia 1836-1860 show several voyages under Captain Hyde from
London to Port Adelaide in both the Competitor and
Grecian. On October 13, 1850 the barque Grecian sailed
successfully into the waters off Port Adelaide but due to
a rare hurricane could not get to port. Hyde had double anchors out but they both dragged until the vessel
grounded and ultimately was lost. Captain Hyde managed to get all away safely but for one passenger who
was below when everyone escaped to the boats. This sextant undoubtedly given to Hyde by those who sur-
vived the incident and those who arrived in previous years under his command. Fine and quite interesting
with the Australian connection.

*137. LARGE, EARLY PAIR OF SHIP'S GIMBALED LANTERNS. Only set like them
that I've come across over last 34 years. Bought
these in Newburyport around 1974. Silver plated brass construction.
Height including burner 14". Maximum diameter 5". Beautifully made
having decoratively pierced cylinder where removable oil tank/burner is
housed. Lower portion nicely shaped having ball finial at bottom that is
decorated with 7 deeply incised lines. This lower area lead filled and very
heavy so movement is slower and controlled. Gimbal arm has backplate
and curved support bracket. Protrudes from wall 12". Have the period brass
burners but need chimneys that have flared, 3" diameter, bases. Condition
excellent noting that silver plate worn in several areas and now brass is
showing through. Very handsome and unique 19th century examples that likely were on some sort of pas-
senger carrying vessel or clipper ship. The best of their type.
