*118. PRESENTATION PROSPECT GLASS AND MINI WATERCOLOR OF SHIP. Elegant six-draw spyglass
signed around eyepiece "DOLLOND/LONDON". First draw with engraved inscription "M.D. to A.W.". All gilt
brass construction with 2" diameter barrel that is wrapped with ebonized ivory veneer. Length closed 1 1/4"
extending to 3 3/4". Original red leather case with hinged lid. Also with it is tiny, 2" diameter, watercolor with
port view of British Frigate on one side and a lovely hand-written poem on the
reverse. Heading reads "H.B. Woodhouse/to his sister/Miss Ann Woodhouse".
Poem reads "Then once more farewell as the wind it sits far/and the vessel
she casts for the sea/then cheer up your courage and never despair/and
whimper no longer for me/my heart shall be constant wherever I go/each
doubt and suspicion is vain/I fear not the Ocean, I fear not the foe/Hope says,
I shall come safe again". At bottom he gives information "His Majesty's Ship
Plantagenet getting under way with the signal for a pilot". Writing very tiny
but meticulously done and all legible. Originally the painting/poem was
stored in the base of the scope case, it was carefully removed and framed
under glass(poem side illustrated). Condition of everything very fine noting a typical shrinkage crack in the ivory
veneer. Obviously two nice gifts that Ann Woodhouse received. H.M.S. Plantagenet was launched 1801 and
served the Admiralty well until broken up in 1817. Both pieces
