Items 114 to 170 represent another grouping of marine antiquities
that were on display at the Kennebunkport Maritime Museum since
the early 1980's. Most all the pieces have been in my personal collec-
tion for decades, some for well over 30 years. In continuing my effort
to thin down the collection I am making available another nice selec-
tion of these fine, rare and, in many cases, unique maritime artifacts.

engraved "Widenham London No 1401". Earnshaw type balance. Brass gimbal, lock
and bowl that is also stamped on inside "1401". Overall diameter 3 1/2". Mahogany
box 5 1/2" x 5 1/2" x 6" high. Front with ivory disc engraved "1401". Brass key
escutcheon and upper half with brass plaque engraved "1401". Fancy brass inlay
surrounding button for releasing small top lid. Sides with brass drop handles.
Condition excellent noting that the small top lid is beautifully replaced by a profes-
sional clock cabinetry firm. Keeps good time. Also has outer storage box that is a
replacement made sometime during use. Richard Widenham is listed at the
Lombard St. address circa 1835. This chronometer, no. 1401, is listed in Mercer's "Chronometer Makers of
the World". A fine and very desirable marine chronometer especially in this small size.

*117. RARE SHIPBUILDER"S PLAQUE FROM BATH MAINE FIRM. Heavy bronze plate with deep
stamped lettering "Wm T DONNELL/BUILDER/BATH ME". 9"x9" with rounded edges.
Mounted on a teak backboard, 12" x 12", with rounded corners and routed edge.
Condition excellent. William T. Donnell was one of Bath's most prominent ship-
builders throughout the last half of the 19th century. Donnell and his partner,
Gardiner Deering built 63 schooners between 1866 and 1886. After the partnership
dissolved Donnell built eight more four-masted schooners. Recently there has been
renewed interest in Donnell due to the recent restoration of his elegant Bath home
that is part of the Bath Maritime Museum and open to the public. Will supply a few
newspaper articles about Donnell and his restored home. The only Donnell plate I've
seen available in over 30 years. The Bath Maritime Museum lacks one in their col-
lection. They have to be very rare due to the fact that he built very few vessels as sole proprietor. I bought
this one from Chatham, MA dealer Keith Kittredge around 1978.
