*107. SCRIMSHAW PIE CRIMPER WITH FORK. Well made handle using combination of 15 pieces of whale
ivory, ebony and mahogany. Nicely made three tine fork that may be
an old replacement but done so well I'm not sure...reason I question
it is because age patina of whale ivory a shade lighter than ivory on
rest of piece. 2" diameter serrated wheel. Whale ivory end piece
grooved to resemble four fingers. Overall length 7 3/4". Condition
very good having two sound age cracks on section that holds the
wheel. Nice age color. Circa 1850.

their hats, work clothing and holding deck brushes. 4" x 6". Reverse with pho-

*109. STEREOSCOPIC VIEW OF WHALING SCENE. Depicts whaleship at sea
with boats pursuing whales and one being stove by a large Sperm Whale. Circa
1880's. Reverse marked "Stereoscopic Views/of/A Whaling Voyage/by Charles H.
Shute & Son/Edgartown, Mass...". Lists 12 different views and states "These
Views are the most correct representations of the Whale Fishery ever offered
to the public". This view being #5 "Stoven Boat". 3 1/2" x 7". Condition excel-
lent. Water stain on outer margin that does not affect image.

*110. POLYCHROME COLORED SCRIMSHAW TOOTH. Engraved both sides with front depict-
ing 3/4 view of female with long hair and a fancy hat and dress. Around her neck is a necklace
with cross that is colored red. All work done in pin prick and line style. Reverse with young
girl and female done mostly in pin prick style. Work on this side is not as refined as front and
may be slightly incomplete. Length 6" x 2 1/2" wide at base. Condition excellent. Fine age
patina. Circa 1850-60.

*111. AMERICAN TELL-TALE COMPASS BY NEW YORK MAKER.
Signed on the 4" diameter dry card "JOHN BLISS & CO/NEW-YORK".
All brass compass housing and gimbal. Overall diameter 5 1/2" x 3 3/4"
deep. Original, ornate cast bronze hanging bracket with green patina
finish. Condition of everything excellent. The firm took the John Bliss
& Co. name in 1857 when John Bliss Sr. died and Junior took in his
brother as a partner. The firm went on to successfully manufacture chronometers
and other types of navigational instruments including the most
popular taffrail log on the market.

*112. WHALE KILLING LANCE BY NEW BEDFORD MAKER. Iron shank with cone socket at one end and
petal-shaped blade at other end. Blade deep
marked "Cast Steel" on one side and with
maker's mark
"A.J.P." on reverse. Still with it is original, sail cloth covered, wooden sheath.
Overall length 59". Condition very good having expected minor bends and deep
brown patina. Ambrose J. Peters is first listed 1879 in New Bedford as a black-
smith. He worked for James Driggs from 1898-1902 when he then took over
Driggs shop which he ran until his death in 1918. An especially desirable piece of
whale craft with the sheath and New Bedford firm markings.

*113. PRISONER-OF-WAR BONE SNUFF BOX with domed lid relief carved depicting
Brittania in her chariot being pulled by two bare breasted mermaids. Bottom also
decorated with raised diamonds and scribed line borders. Condition excellent.
Even three tiny hinges all intact. Great age color. Circa 1790. Nice.
