*100. 19TH CENTURY SCRIMSHAW TOOTH carved both sides with front
depicting full view of young woman wearing patriotic striped dress that is
polychrome colored in light red. Very pretty gown that is embellished with
several flowers and delicate lace at neckline. Her hair also nicely done with
band and two flowers. Reverse with American Eagle that has polychrome col-
ored patriotic shield in front of his chest and arrows in his talons. Nice solid
tooth measuring 6 1/2" l. x 2 3/4" wide. Condition very good but side with
Eagle apparently had an imperfection or was chipped long, long ago and
smoothed over. Blemished area has good age color and does not interfere with
scene. Overall a very nice tooth.

*101. SAILOR"S ROPE-WORK BASKET. Very
nicely made using numerous techniques of rope
weaving. Base diameter 6" with sides tapered out making top diameter 9". Base
tightly woven while sides done in open pattern with scalloped design along top
edge. Depth 3 1/2". Varnished finish that has acquired nice age brown color.
Condition excellent. Probably early 20th century. Very nice example of this
form of sailor's art.

*102. LARGE SCRIMSHAW CLOCK TOWER. Teakwood construction done in three tiers
with lower sections fitted with drawers. Tops of each section
inset with bands of baleen and decorated on each corner with
whale ivory finials. Top with pocket watch opening that is
framed in carved whale ivory. All twelve corner columns inset
with ivory stringing and varying abalone and mother of pearl
designs. Drawer fronts with stringing, shell inlays and turned
whale ivory knobs. Sides of top section with inlaid geometric
stars done in ebony and ivory. Sides of lower two tiers with
abalone and mother of pearl inlays of varying designs including
stars, hearts, triangles, brackets, etc. Base fitted with four,
scroll carved, whale ivory feet. 14" wide x 9" deep x 16 1/2"
maximum height. Has a simple Hamilton watch fitted into
upper opening. Condition of everything excellent. Circa 1850. A handsome and impressively proportioned
scrimshaw watch holder.

*103. EARLY CHECK FROM WHALING BANK. Printed within decorative
border on left edge "WHALING BANK". Upper left with whaling scene that
shows ship with her longboats actively pursuing whales. Dated "NEW-
LONDON, Dec. 30th 1837". From "CASHIER of the WHALING BANK" in
the amount of $16.54. Condition excellent. 2 1/2" x 6 1/2". Would display
nicely mixed in with scrimshaw collection.

1838. Top center with illustration of a Sperm Whale. 2 1/2" x 6". Second check on blue paper from "BED-
FORD COMMERCIAL BANK". Left side with illustration(signed "Howland") of ships in harbor with city in
background. Dated "New Bedford Nov 28, 1863". 2 1/4" x 7". Condition of both very good.

knob with inset tortoise shell star on top. Tapered tropical wood
shaft. Where shaft and knob connect is a turks head knot that I
believe is made from woven baleen strands. Overall length 34".
