*88. FULL BOX OF WATCH OIL FROM FAMOUS NEW BEDFORD MAKER. Twelve unopened,
wax sealed, bottles in their original wood shipping box.
Front of box with green trade label handsomely printed
"EZRA KELLEY'S...superfine WATCH OIL...one dozen...New
Bedford, Mass., U.S.A." Box size 4 1/4" x 5" x 3". Original
top lid. Each 2 1/2" tall bottle corked, red wax sealed,
labeled and full of oil. Box still with saw dust used to sepa-
rate and pad the bottles for shipment. Condition of every-
thing perfect. Ezra B. Kelley (1798-1895) was a highly
skilled clock maker who discovered early on the benefits of
lubricating watches with whale and porpoise-jaw oil. Kelley's
business grew rapidly and his product won several medals
of excellence both here and abroad. Kelley pretty much ruled the manufac-
ture of these oils until 1866 when William F. Nye got involved in the same business. A complete and
untouched package of product directly from the whaling industry. Would display very nicely mixed in with a
scrimshaw collection.

*89. PAIR OF SCRIMSHAW TEETH WITH ARTISAN'S SYMBOL. Lovely depic-
tion of two young females in Victorian attire. Possibly mother and daughter
with both meticulously dressed and each wearing hats and holding parasols.
Both showing some leg and wearing boots to about mid calf. 5" tall x 2 1/2"
wide. Quality workmanship using combination of pin prick and line engraving.
Reverse of each with small symbol resembling Union Jack. Mounted on old,
likely period, wood bases with rope twist carving around edges. Condition
excellent noting sound age cracks in base area of both teeth. Over the years
I've had several examples by this artist including the tennis lady illustrated on
page 57 in Flayderman's "Scrimshaw and Scrimshanders". A lovely pair of
Victorian era teeth.
