*81. BUILDER"S PLAQUE FROM BROOKLYN SHIPYARD. Throughout the years I've had
about three of these which at first I thought might have been for advertising but now
feel they were plates put inside vessels to denote the builder. Beautifully made with
fully articulated bronze anchor mounted on a bronze base that is hand engraved
"James Shewan & Sons/Incorporated/DRY DOCKS & SHIPYARDS/10 DRY
DOCKS/Brooklyn N.Y.". Anchor length including shackles 4 1/2". Base size 3 1/2" x 5
1/2". Condition excellent with anchor having deep bronze patina and base with aged
brass showing through generous traces of original nickel finish. Nice New York item.
James Shewan founded the largest dry dock and ship-repairing plant in the port of New
York during the last quarter of the 19th century.

*82. MASSIVE SIZE SCRIMSHAW ROLLING PIN. Overall length 20". Each end fitted
with 4 1/4" whale ivory handles that are attached to center rolling section using ivory
and hard wood spacers. One of handles made in two sections while other is one piece...this is absolutely the
way it was originally made. Quite certain hardwood
center section made of teak. Condition very good
but showing great age and use. Three sound age
cracks in teak and typical age cracks in whale
ivory. Deep, desirable age patina on ivory handles.
Believe this to be the largest example I've seen. Would be quite rare to find an example even close to this
size. Impressive piece of 19th century scrimshaw. Circa 1830-40.
