*75. LARGE WHALEBONE DITTY BOX. Lightly scrimshaw carved around side
with six different vessels and a lighthouse. One of the American ships flying
house flag with letter "T". Another small schooner or pilot boat with "P" on
flag. Diameter 7 5/8" x 3 1/2" tall. Wood top and bottom. Nicely cut out finger
design where bone joins together. Condition very good noting a few slivers
missing along bottom edge of top lid and scrimshaw engraving light but all vis-
ible. Excellent age color throughout. Circa 1840. These large whalebone boxes
getting very, very scarce. First big one I've had in a while.

*76. SAILOR'S CARVED WOOD BOX WITH
NAUTICAL AND AMERICAN PATRIOTIC MOTIFS. Exact piece illustrated
page 161 in Flayderman's "Scrimshaw and Scrimshanders" and Klamkin's
"Marine Antiques" page 151. 8" x 8" x 7" tall. All four sides and top pro-
fusely carved with anchors, hearts, Eagles, shields, flags, swords, arrows,
floral motifs, etc. Front and right side with dramatic American Eagles over
shields and flags and with banners in their beaks that are inscribed
"E.PLURIBUS UNUM". Hinged lid for access to interior that is fitted with a
single, removable tray. Overall condition excellent noting that a few bits of
carved decorations are missing but they can easily be restored if so
desired. All in original, natural wood, finish that was varnished and now
has acquired a nice age patina and surface. A handsome and very desirable
piece of 19th century sailor's art.

*77. EXTREMELY RARE NAUTICAL BROADSIDE...STEAMBOAT BEN FRANKLIN. Single sheet(12" x 13")
printed one side with large woodcut illustration of sidewheeler steaming along
with dozens of people on board and with large American flag flying off her stern.
Below the water pre-printed information "THE STEAMBOAT/Bn. Franklin/Capt
E.S. Bunker/Will leave the Rail-Road Depot, at India Point/Providence, on
at
o'clock, M. 1836/Fare $ and Found". The blank spaces are filled in with beauti-
ful ink handwriting for this trip "Thursday 28th December 1837 3 PM". Also
Captain Bunker's name is carefully crossed out and a new captain's name filled
in "J.J. Comstock". Bottom marked "Printed by Knowles, Vose & Co., 15 Market
Square Providence". The vessel was built for Capt. Bunker in 1828 and in that
year participated in a race to Newport which the Franklin won by 3 miles. Capt.
Bunker was previously employed by the Steamboat Co. of Robert Fulton.
Condition overall excellent. Mounted in a nice old white gold frame. A very rare and early piece of maritime
advertising. Fine nautical Americana.

*78. TWO-FLUED WHALING IRON. Overall length 37 3/4". Iron shank with pole cone at one end and 3 3/4"
wide two-flued head at other. Condition good and
sound but with heavy rust pitting. Metal with deep
brown age patina.

end and 3 1/2" wide two-flued head at other. Overall length 29". Condition sound but has heavy rust pitting.
Metal with mixing black and brown patina finish.
Display board was made in late 1960's and has an
engraved brass plaque affixed "Double Fluke
Arctic/Whaling Harpoon/1840/Capt. D.
Tirrell/Maine, U.S.A.". Have no way to verify the
connection to Capt. Tirrell so just offering it as a good, honest 19th century, iron.
