voyage. Printed with illustrations both sides. One side printed at top "Frank E. Brown,
Manufacturer/4 South Water St., New Bedford, Mass., U.S.A.". Below are illustrations, descrip-
tions and prices for Pierce shoulder gun, bomb lances and Pierce darting gun. Reverse with
toggle irons, lances, spades, knives, etc. 5"w. x 12"h. Mounted in a wood frame with glass on
both sides for full viewing. An identical example illustrated both sides on page 2 in Lytle's
book "Harpoons and other Whalecraft". This one from Barbara Johnson Collection, sale III,
lot 203. Condition excellent. Great whaling ephemera.

*62. ALL BRONZE WHALE GUN BY NEW BEDFORD MAKER WILLIAM LEWIS. Top of breech
and pivoting breech block stamped with
number "12". Iron trigger and hammer.
Skeleton stock. Barrel bore 7/8". Overall
length 34 1/4". Condition excellent noting
that tiny sight at end of barrel missing.
Brass with desirable, mustard color, age patina. Gun was
manufactured by William Lewis of New Bedford and was described by him in his circa 1896 "Illustrated cata-
log of Whaling Utensils".

*63. EGGERS, NEW BEDFORD....BRASS WHALING GUN. Breech loader with heavy hinged breechblock that
drops downward when the large lever is released on the inside of the skeleton stock. Took a center fire, #8,
cartridge in the breech. Top of barrel fully marked "S.
EGGERS/NEW BEDFORD MASS/Pat Feb 12 1878". Serial
number "229" deep stamped under barrel and on the
heavy breech device. Large iron hammer protrudes from
top of gun. Iron trigger. Barrel bore almost 1". Overall
length 37". Included is correct size, 17"l., Pierce bomb
lance with brass tube and four copper fins. Condition
very good noting that gun is missing one small brass fit-
ting that created friction for lever that held breechblock in place. Gun and bomb with nice brass age patina.
Selmar Eggers was a 19th century New Bedford gun maker who ultimately specialized in the manufacture of
whaling guns. The gun and lance

*64. BEAUTIFULLY MADE, 19TH CENTURY, SCRIMSHAW COCONUT DIPPER. Overall length 17". Handle
made in 13 different sections consisting of whale ivory, light and dark
wood, and ebony. Very end all nicely carved from whale ivory with tip
forming a flower bud. Also has a hinged or pivoting bail for hanging
when not in use. Unusually large section of Whale ivory where handle
attaches to coconut bowl...this piece carved in the form of a heart
with an incised and tapered border. Overall condition very nice noting
a very well done repair, on the upper edge of coconut bowl, that really
does not detract from overall look of piece. A really nice and well
made example of its type.

*65. BALEEN DITTY BOX scrimshaw carved around entire upper and lower
sides with building, church, palm trees and leaf borders. Wood top and bot-
tom. Long diamond shaped fingers joining baleen together. Oval shaped meas-
uring 6 1/2"l. x 4 5/8" w. x 3 1/2" tall. Condition very good noting few small
losses along very bottom edge. Circa 1840.

*66. WHALE IVORY TABLE CLAMP fitted
with nicely turned cup for holding
sewing accessories. Very well made and
nice large size measuring 5" tall plus turn screw for holding device firm
to table. Cup diameter 2". Very well proportioned and nicely shaped to
resemble the letter G. Has relief carved diamonds below area where cup
joins with clamp. Fine condition. Great age color. Circa 1840-50. Rare
scrimshaw item.
