*55. 19TH CENTURY SCRIMSHAW PIE CRIMPER. Exact piece illustrated on page 174 in Flayderman's
"Scrimshaw and Scrimshanders". Quite long measuring 8
1/2". Four piece handle made mostly of ebony wood with
whale ivory divider, end cap and inlays. Both sides inset with
three triangular pieces of ivory each having a circular disc
inset above. 1 3/4" diameter serrated whalebone wheel that is
held by nicely fashioned whalebone arms. Overall condition fine. An unusual crimper.

*56. THE WHALING BARK WANDERER. Small section of planking salvaged from
this famous New Bedford whaler. 3 1/4"l. x 2 1/4"w. x 1 1/2" thick. Plaque affixed
with information "PLANKING FROM/WHALING BARK/WANDERER 1878-1924/wrecked
on Cuttyhunk Aug. 26". Still has remains of several copper nails embedded in wood.
Natural varnish finish. Condition excellent.

*57. PHOTO OF THE WANDERER FRAMED IN HER
WOOD. 12" x 14" sepia toned photo showing vessel floundering on the beach at
Cuttyhunk. Excellent starboard view of her leaning slightly over showing full
deck view. Also vessel turned just enough so her name is visible on stern.
Frame made from 1" wide strips of Wanderer's planking that still has remnants
of copper nails used to attach her sheathing. Varnished finish from 1920's has
fine alligatored surface and excellent age color. Has plaque attached with info
"PLANKING FROM/WHALING BARK WANDERER 1878-1924/ wrecked on
Cuttyhunk Aug. 26".

*58. LARGE SCRIMSHAW TOOTH with scenes carved on both sides. One
side depicts standing female with hand on her heart and a scepter resting in
her left arm. To her left is an anchor and word "HOPE". To her right and in
the distance is a ship and a sunrise. Above her head an urn with flowers.
Reverse depicts 3/4 portrait of a female within a circular frame of flowers.
Above her are tree branches and three birds. Finely engraved and with few
red highlights on side with girl. Thick, heavy tooth that measures 7 1/2"l. x
3"w. Condition excellent. Nice age color. Circa 1850.

*59. EXTREMELY RARE NAVAL DIRK WITH EAGLE-POMMEL. Circa 1800.
Solid ivory grip with knurl or cross hatch carving that terminates just below
a decorative carved band. S-shaped cross-guard with disc finials. Nicely deco-
rated ferrule. Chain knuckle-guard that attaches in Eagle's
mouth and in disc finial. 14" long curved blade. Condition of
blade missing most of original finish but still showing some
gilt in decorative engraving and at top just below the guard.
Eagle pommel, back strap and ferrule all with generous
amounts of gold finish. Appears to have had a side-ring(possibly with 5-ball decoration) added to the guard
that is now missing. Seam where back-strap and ferrule join now separated but handle all intact and stable.
Ivory with nice age color throughout. Overall a good solid example of a dirk form that is nearly impossible to
find on today's market.

*60. U.S. NAVY CHRONOMETER WATCH with both cases. Hamilton model
22 with 21 jewel movement. Three piece, watch type case with snap dust
cover. Overall diameter 2 3/4". Silver white dial with Arabic numerals and
markings "HAMILTON WATCH CO./Lancaster, PA., U.S.A.". Blued steel hour,
minute, second and up/down hands. Back of case marked "BUREAU OF
SHIPS/U.S. NAVY/N946-1941/CHRONOMETER WATCH". Padded mahogany
case with hinged lid and instruction plate above viewing window. Also has
original mahogany carrying box(7"x 8") with maker plate on front. Condition
about mint. Because of a few unique innovations these were truly remark-
able timepieces that equalled or exceeded the performance of most foreign
made ship's chronometers. A fine and complete outfit.
