overall very good noting some rubbing on high spots

*50. CARVED TILLER WITH PAINTED SURFACE. Nice early example done with varying rope designs and
monkey fist knot at very tip. Rear section that slips over
rudder with 8 carved pin-wheels and other relief designs.
Very back end with relief carved face. Overall length 24".
Entire surface with original green, red and brown paint
that is now aged and alligatored but excellent noting
high areas on rope motifs worn and missing some paint. Very folky looking. Circa 1840. Illustrated page 50
in Klamkin's "Marine Antiques".

*51. WELL CARVED TILLER WITH VESSEL NAME AND INITIALS. Nice large size measuring 48"l. Front end
with monkey fist knot followed by cross hatch designs, carved rings and a smooth section where skipper
places his hand. Center section with
two large turk's head knots at each end
of four sections of rope twist carving.
Aft end with deep checkered motif sur-
rounding triangular design that con-
tains vessel name "SPIDDER THE FIRST". On underside, also within checkered border and triangle, is ini-
tials "WPB". Condition excellent with original crackled finish and fine age color. Circa 1860. Boldly carved
and quite handsome.

*52. 19TH CENTURY TILLER WITH CARVED HAND at front end. Middle section with ring motifs at each
end of a 6" section of flute carving. Rear section
where tiller would slide over rudder post carved in
relief with anchors on each side and large star at
very end. Overall length 22 1/2". Condition
superb. All in natural finish that has a lovely age
patina. Circa 1860. Handsome.

*53. 19TH CENTURY, POLYCHROME COLORED, SCRIMSHAW TOOTH. Carved one side
with full portrait of a female in fancy Victorian dress. She is fully accessorized with jewelry
on her wrist and neck and flowers in her hair and left hand. Her right hand is touching a
pendant at her neck. She also has an elbow cover that extends from mid bicep to mid fore-
arm. The dress has a large floral design on right front. Lovely quality work combining pin
prick and line technique with everything polychrome colored in light shades of blue, red
and green. Length 5 1/2" x 3" wide. Condition fine. Excellent age patina. Classic example of
its type.

*54. SHIP IN A BOTTLE WITH UNIQUE FAUX PAINTED STAND. Excellent quality example
depicting a white hulled ship being escorted in a har-
bor by a steam tug. In the background a wonderful
depiction of a small village with five buildings includ-
ing a church, town hall with flag pole and houses. In between buildings
are several trees. Separating village and water is a sea wall. Bottle
length 12". Nicely mounted in original, custom made, wood stand that
retains faux painted finish done in a mottled motif. Base color a deep
maroon with black with gold dappling throughout. Round handle all in
gold. Overall length 14" x 7 1/2" high. Condition excellent with painted
surface having acquired nice age color and desirable alligatored surface. As an afterthought appears artisan
cut a small window into the backboard allowing in light so that inside of bottle can be better viewed.
Probably dates 1890-1900. Quite unusual and is one of the nicest we've had in quite some time.
