A rare collection of 19th century carved wood tiller arms
*44. CARVED BOAT TILLER WITH DATE. Made from a single piece of oak with front section carved into the
shape of an arm and closed hand. Middle with circu-
lar wheel design and just aft of that a relief carved
date "1849". Rear of tiller carved with another relief
design. Overall length 30". Condition somewhat
weathered and worn but good. A real working tiller
with a great salty look.

*45. SUPERBLY CARVED TILLER WITH NAMES, DATE & TOWN. Overall length 20 1/4". Front section all
done in rope motifs including turk's head knot, twisted rope and monkey fist knot. Behind the rope carving
all four sides with deep incised carving of diamonds, hearts, floral, fish, etc. motifs. Aft section that would
slide into the top of rudder carved with name
"ALEXANDER COCHRANE" on one side. Opposite
with another name in fancy script carving "J.
Wa l d ron" . Top edge with town name "BRIDPORT"
and bottom with Union Jack and date "1843".
Condition fine. Excellent age patina. In our 1977 cat-
alog #10, item 88 we had a very similar tiller by the
exact same carver. This example illustrated page 33 in Norm Flayderman's book "The Bowie Knife
Unsheathing an American Legend". A superb piece of nautical carving by a very skilled artisan.

*46. FINE CARVED TILLER WITH SEA SERPENT HEAD. Very unusual and attractive example carved from a
single piece of dark oak. Overall length 30".
Middle section with downward curve and rope
twist carving. Front section with full, large sea
serpent head followed by carved scales that ter-
minate at beginning of rope section. Condition
fine. Wonderful age color throughout. Exact
piece illustrated page 50 in Klamkin's book "Marine Antiques". Very, very nice and obviously the work of a
quite skilled carver. Circa 1850.

*47. CARVED TILLER with curved handle and rope motifs. Overall length 26". At front end is 5"l. section for
placing hand while steering. This section with raised rope carvings at each end. Middle section that curves
upward has rope twist design and a double strand of cop-
per wire worming in the grooves. Rear section that fits
over rudder with cross hatch carving on sides and brass
binding around all the edges. Overall condition good but
has a 19th century mend to a crack at the rear section of
the shaft. Repair done using tightly wound copper wire
that has acquired a dark age patina allowing it to blend nicely with rest of carving. Nice rugged appearance.
Good nautical carving. Circa 1850.

*48. ELABORATELY CARVED TILLER WITH EAGLE HEAD ON END. Beautifully executed and obviously the
work of a professional ship carver. Constructed from single piece of thick oak. Overall length 38". Behind the
Eagle are two rope rings that sit at each end
of a large section of spiral rope carving. Aft
section with clenched fist holding floral
branch and a banner with Latin motto "Esse
Quam Videri" (to be rather than to seem/State
motto of North Carolina). Behind that two
more rope rings at each end of a section of
deep carved letters forming names "MERLIN/GEOe TREVn RAYNES". Condition fine with all original finish
that has acquired excellent age color throughout. Likely a presentation piece to a prominent yacht owner.
Top-notch example.
