*39. "SPERM WHALING" is the caption below an active whaling scene depicted on this 19th century
scrimshaw tooth. Am quite positive this is the work of battle engraver
artisan. Long, narrow tooth that measures 8 1/4" x 2 1/4" max width.
Front with detailed whaling scene having two ships in background and
six whaleboats actively engaged in
Sperm whaling. One longboat being
stove sending men overboard. A
few other whales in sea within red
coloring. One whale with waif flag. Water with light blue/green coloring.
Reverse with beautifully rendered nocturnal scene depicting vessels
passing lighthouse in violent sea. Dark sky with dramatic lightning
bolts depicted. Caption below "EDDYSTONE LIGHT HOUSE". Condition excellent. Very desirable subject mat-
ter and as always superb workmanship by this artisan.

gone. Condition overall excellent having just few age cracks and small
sliver of bone missing from back rear edge where pins pass through.
Blank silver nameplate inset into top. Drawer front, base of lid and
top edge of lower section all decorated with incised lines. Very well
made and quite heavy. A rare and quite unique piece of 19th century American scrimshaw.

*42. "TORREY'S U.S. NAVY RAZOR STROP" are the bold markings that surround a vignette depicting a
sailor standing by a ship's capstan. All printed on a
deep red label that is affixed to the top of a long case
that stores shaving gear. Entire interior of slip case
removable for access to sharpening material. Also fitted
with a tin drawer that has a wood front with brass
knob. Still contains the original straight razor with full
markings "The Torrey Razor Co/Worcester, Mass/USA".
Overall length 14" x 1 1/2" wide. Over the years we have had just a few of these with this one by far being in
the best condition of all. The J. R. Torrey Razor Company of Worcester was established in 1858. These sets
typically bought at ship's stores by Civil War sailors.

*43. U.S. NAVY ROPE KNIFE. Typical navy issue with 4" long, square tipped, blade with deep stamped mark-
ing "UNITED STATES NAVY". Also marked by maker
"ALFRED/WILLIAMS/SHEFFIELD/ENGLAND". Stag
handles and copper lanyard bail. Length open 8
1/4" plus bail. Condition good with nice full blade
that has typical surface pitting scattered through-
out. Nice age wear and patina on handle slabs.
Looks like pivot pin was replaced at some point but mechanism works fine having strong spring action.
Likely dates from Spanish American War era.
