*36. COLLECTION OF ITEMS FROM CHIEF MACHINIST, GEORGE D. FAUBEL, WHO PERISHED ABOARD
THE U.S.S. MAINE WHEN IT WAS SUNK IN HAVANA HARBOR. Included in the grouping are: 1 . His stan-
dard issue USN sailor's dark blue wool, visorless flat hat with original silk ribbon embroidered "U.S.S.
MAINE". Inside a bit unusual in that it is lined with a plaid cotton material. 2 . A hand made flat cap like pre-
vious that is entirely hand sewn and likely given to him by a family member or sweetheart. The silk ribbon is
embroidered in large script letters "U.S.S. Maine". The entire top
of the cap is embroidered in multi colored silk with a fancy star
design that has floral motifs between the points. The inner sweat
band is purple silk and the underside of the top is lined in black
silk that is decorated with a circle of floral motifs that surround a
large embroidered "Merry Xmas". 3 . Wallet style, leather covered
diary with first page entry "George Deforest Faubel/enlisted U.S.
Navy/Wednesday July 31, 95". All the pages filled out in pencil
with last entry dated Feb. 8th 1897. Most of the entries brief with
one lengthy account on Feb 6th 1897 that covers 11 pages detail-
ing a rough gale, loss of men overboard and daring rescues. 4 .
Complimenting the just mentioned entry is a pen and ink and
pencil drawing of the MAINE in that gale. 12 1/2" x 17". Depicts
the vessel in heavy seas, two men holding on to a life preserver in
the foreground and a longboat in the background(all as described in the diary). Above the vessel is an open
wing Eagle with a ribbon in its beak inscribed "U.S.S. MAINE IN THE STORM OFF HATTERAS FEB 6th 1897".
Artist signature lower right "P. Schiot". 5 . Tin-type photo of Faubel in his white summer jumper. 6 . Studio
photo portrait of Faubel in civilian clothes. N.Y. photographer's label on back. 7 . On board photo(5" x 7") of a
large group of enlisted men and one chief petty officer. Faubel is on the far left. 8 . Two different styles of
First Class Mechanics embroidered sleeve insignia worn by Faubel. 9 . Chief Mechanics Mate sleeve insignia
that is fancy embroidered in silver bullion(his diary mentions his appointment Jan 14, 1896 as Acting Chief
Machinist at $70.00 per month). 1 0 . Original broadside announcing entertainment aboard the Maine on
March 27, 1896. Faubel is listed as one of the MAINE's quartette. Condition complete but separated at one
fold and weak at the other. 1 1 . Two government letters, each dated Jan., 1900, to Faubel's brother Albert
regarding the recovery of bodies from the MAINE and the fact that many were unidentified, his brother possi-
bly among them. 1 2 . A group of miscellaneous items pertaining to the ship including a trade card by Singer
Sewing Machine Co with the MAINE on the front. Also an interesting small booklet dated 1904 by "BATTLE-
SHIP MAINE SALVAGE CO". It is a 12 page stock offering by a firm trying to raise money to salvage the ves-
sel. Lastly original news clippings and a special edition of Leslie's Weekly for March 3, 1898 all about the
MAINE incident...the clippings and magazine all in rather poor condition. Overall condition of everything else
excellent. The grouping descended through the Faubel family until it was sold in the early 1970's. All in all a
most interesting group of items directly associated to one our Navy's most famous vessels and one of the
most memorable events in U.S. Navy history. The collection
