*30. LIVERPOOL PITCHER WITH POLYCHROME DECORATIONS BOTH SIDES.
One side with sailing ship flying a large American
flag. Reverse with large and colorful transfer depicting
a female seated on shore with an anchor along her
side. She has her hands on her heart while gazing out
to sea as a ship flying two American flags sails away.
Above the scene is caption "HOPE". This Hope trans-
fer is very rare to find with the vessel flying the
American flag. Below the spout is a small polychrome
scene of three men greeting each other along a path.
Height 9". Condition very nice.

*31. IMPORTANT BRASS PATENT HARPOON MODEL submitted to the U.S.
Patent Office March 16, 1844 by Albert Moor of Hampden, Maine. This is the
exact harpoon patent discussed pages 50 & 51 in Lytle's book "Harpoons and
Other Whalecraft" and was the first explosive harpoon patented in the United States. All hand fabricated in
solid brass and patterned after single-fluted irons. Have a pieced together copy of the patent document in
which Moor explains that a small vial of explosive powder is placed under the pivoting fluke of the harpoon
and when pressure breaks a wooden holding pin the head opens and the vial breaks producing friction that
causes the powder to explode and kill
the whale. Further on in the docu-
ment Moor explains his formula for
making the explosive powder. Overall

nal printed patent tag that is filled out in fine ink calligraphy "No 3490/A. Moore(sic)/ Harpoon/Patented Mar.
16th/1844". Also from patent office is another hand written tag with info "#3490/ 16 Mar. 1844/Bomb
Lance/A. Moore, Hampden, Me/Only whaling iron patent antedating/this bomb lance is #2195, W. Carseley,
1841/Reid from U.S. Patent Office-20 July 1926". Condition of everything excellent. Beautiful, professional
quality, workmanship. A handsome and very important piece of American whaling history.

*32. SCRIMSHAW TOOTH...."EMMA". Lovely tooth scrimshaw carved both sides with por-
traits. Front with young girl in a fancy dress holding a flower in her left hand. Above her
in floral embellished banner is name "EMMA". Reverse with 3/4 portrait of a woman wear-
ing an elegant shawl and holding a fan in her right hand. 5"h. x 2 1/4" wide at base.
Condition fine. Tooth was nicely smoothed when prepared by artisan and now has
acquired a desirable age color over entire surface. Excellent quality workmanship and
overall a fine 19th century tooth.

*33. CIVIL WAR SAILOR'S SHAVING KIT. 3 1/4" diameter
container made of hard rubber or gutta-percha. Friction fit-
ting lid all relief decorated with sun burst motif that sur-
rounds rope design, fouled anchor, stars, "U.S.N." and
famous words of James Lawrence "DON'T GIVE UP THE
SHIP". Inside of lid with mirror and lower section deep
enough to hold shaving soap. Overall thickness 1 1/2". Bottom and bezel
around inner mirror both marked with raised lettering "Manufactured by The
Novelty Rubber Co. New Brunswick New Jersey Under Goodyear Patent, May 6
1851". Condition very good with mirror having some silver loss and outer case
somewhat discolored from original black to chocolate brown color.

*34. POLYCHROME COLORED WHALEBONE BUSK. Wonderful quality folk art carving over entire front sur-
face. Done in nine separate sections that
include a heart, floral scenes, geometric
stars, pin wheels, etc., all bordered by del-
icate leaf motifs. Everything carefully
polychrome colored in red, green, blue and black. 13 1/2" long x 1 3/8" wide. Superb condition. Fine age pati-
na and all coloring nicely age toned. Terrific example of its type. Circa 1840.
