*19. SMALL WHALE IVORY DOUBLE BLOCK complete with rope-work
and fittings. Block size 1 3/4" x 1 1/4" x 1" thick. Whale ivory sheaves.
Has fabric covered rope-work which affixes bronze thimble to top of
block. Attached to thimble is hand made bronze hook that is very nicely
fashioned having its tip arrow shaped to resemble fluke on an anchor.
Overall length 5 3/4" Condition excellent with ivory having nice age color
and bronze with desirable dark patina. A lovely little 19th century scrimshaw block.

*20. STERLING SILVER, CHINA TRADE, BOSUN WHISTLE. Very
small size probably for use by young child. Length 2 3/4". One
side decorated in relief with full length mythical dragon and other
side with "Hong Kong" in raised letters. Condition excellent hav-
ing only few tiny nicks in bowl. Scarce item.

*21. LARGE SAILOR'S KNIFE WITH NICELY CARVED WOOD HANDLE in the form of a clenched fist. 9" long
steel blade with name "R. F. MILLER/BARK SMYRNA NEW
BEDFORD" stamped on side. Letters individually stamped and
inspection under strong magnification shows that they were
put on a long time ago. No way to be 100% positive these
stampings were from 19th century so we're offering the knife
for what it surely is...an excellent sailor's fixed blade knife
with a great carved handle and sheath of the period. The han-
dle measures 5 1/4" long mak-
ing overall length 14 3/4". 19th century, custom made, thick leather sheath
with belt loop and very tip decorated with turk's head knot. Condition overall
excellent with blade showing some sharpening but quite full. Typical pitting
mostly at tip. Handle retaining most of original dark finish with some small areas rubbed through to natural
wood color. Fine and desirable age patina throughout. Fine example of an implement that was a most impor-
tant part of every aspect of a sailor's life.

*22. LARGE SCRIMSHAW TOOTH carved one side with starboard
view of an English barque. Hull carved in deep intaglio style that
was a popular technique used by English whalemen. A bit of red
coloring in flag and pennants. Tooth preparation a bit unusual in
that artisan smoothed a large panel for the scene and left the
remainder of the tooth in its natural state. Heavy, solid tooth that
measures 8"l. x 3 1/4" w. Condition excellent noting that the deep
carved hull may have had some ink added where there was pig-
ment loss, something that commonly happens with this style of
carving. A quite handsome tooth.

*23. HANDSOME GEORGIAN ERA NAVAL DIRK in fine original condition. 7 3/8" l. blade retaining most all
blue and gold decoration on upper portion and bright polish
on lower tip area. Ivory handle with inset wire wrapping. Cross-
shaped guard with leaf and cross hatch decorations. Decorated
ferrule and pommel cap has Lion head at top. Top quality
metal sheath that is beautifully engraved both sides with leaf
and scroll decorations. Condition superb having the great
blade and all other metal retaining 99% original bright gilt fin-
ish. Lovely patina on ivory handle. Overall length 10 1/2". These days it would be hard to find a better exam-
ple of its type. Circa 1790.

*24. EARLY WHALEBONE PIE CRIMPER with nicely fash-
ioned, 1 3/4" diameter, whale ivory wheel. One piece whale-
bone handle that is nicely turned, shaped and tapered over
its entire length. Very end terminates in rounded ball shape.
Overall length 7 3/8". Condition fine. Terrific age color.
Excellent example of its type. Circa 1830-40.
