*1. INTERESTING SAILOR'S MEMENTO CARVED FROM TORTOISESHELL.
Consists of a 1 1/2" oval locket with hinge for access to inside. Both sides
of exterior decorated with intricate pierce carvings. One side having a fouled
anchor with "JAPAN" above and "1889" below. Reverse with elaborate,
entwined initials "TMA" within a leaf border. Attached to locket is a 17"
long chain that has links pierce carved to form the name "T*M*AINSLIE".
Overall condition fine having only a small chip missing from letter a in
word Japan. Lovely little keepsake brought back by a sailor who made a Far
East voyage. Unique item.

*2. SCRIMSHAW TOOTH WITH VIVID POLYCHROME COLORING. Carved
both sides with one view depicting a dancing female holding flowers and
wearing a very fancy and colorful full length dress. Reverse with a danc-
ing couple that are wearing very colorful outfits that make them appear
to be theater people. This side also with bold polychrome coloring.
Length 5 1/2" x 2 1/4" wide. Condition very fine. Wonderful and desir-
able age patina. Great quality polychrome coloring. Very attractive tooth.

*3. ROYAL GEORGE RELIC....A SMALL BOOK BOUND IN HER TIMBER.
2 3/4" x 4 3/8" with dark oak covers sawn from timbers recovered from
Spithead where vessel sank
in 1782. Leather spine with
gilt lettering "RELIC OF THE ROYAL GEORGE". 168+ gilt edged
pages. Tells detailed story of loss and recovery efforts of this
famous warship. Several fine illustrations including one opposite
title page that folds out and depicts tragedy happening. Several
times at beginning there is mention that covers are from vessel's
timber. Detailed title page that reads "A NARRATIVE of the LOSS
of the ROYAL GEORGE at Spithead, August, 1782....BOUND IN THE
WOOD OF THE WRECK....1844". Condition superb throughout. Over the years we've had numerous relics
from this vessel including canes, small cannons, etc all being of superb quality and very collectible. Because
it tells the entire story this piece should be the cornerstone of any Royal George collection.

*4. CREW LIST FROM WHALING BARK BENJAMIN FRANKLIN. Upper
portion preprinted with large American Eagle on a shield and headline
"LIST of PERSONS Comprising the Crew of the Bark Benjamin
Franklin of Fall River whereof is George E. Brown bound for Atlantic
Ocean on a Whaling Voyage". In excellent writing is a list of the
names of 23 men, their birth places, residences, ages and descrip-
tions. Reverse with Fall River Custom House stamp and affidavit dated
November 27, 1856. Also has another inspection report dated June
19, 1858 that lists the names of only six of original crew members
who returned from the voyage. 18"h x 16"w. Condition excellent. Would look great framed.

*5. PORCELAIN CUP WITH HAND PAINTED SHIP PORTRAIT BY A GERMAN
ARTIST. About the best quality painting on one of these cups that I've had.
Depicts port view of steam and sail passenger vessel headed for America with
American flag flying on fore mast. Below water is vessel name "BORUSSIA".
She was built 1854 and was part of the transatlantic passenger service of the
Hamburg America Line. She is also flying the Hamburg, Germany Civil Ensign
used from 1751-1867. Cup measures 3 3/4" tall x max. diameter 4 1/2".
Meticulously painted ship portrait with fine rigging and gilt highlights on
bow. Gilt striping around portrait, base, and top rim. Bottom signed with two
names...one undoubtedly the artist and other probably captain or owner.
Condition mint. The vessel was later purchased by the Dominion Line and
employed as an emigrant ship. In 1879 with 184 persons aboard she sunk
and 169 lives were lost.
